The Sound Behind the Artists: Peter I. N. Rogers’ Role in Modern Music Production

Rogers has built his career in that space. Known professionally as Prince Maestro or PrinceMaestro, he is an American music producer and keyboardist whose work has supported a wide range of artists across gospel, soul, pop, R and B, and hip hop.

Rogers was born and raised in Queens, New York City, where music was woven into his daily life from childhood. His mother recognized his early sense of rhythm and often described his ability as a gift. As a young boy, he would tap on pots and pans as if they were drums, showing an instinctive connection to beat and timing. When he received his first drum set at eight years old, that playful curiosity became a serious pursuit.

He grew up as the youngest of five children in a family where music was constantly present. His oldest brother, Edgar, played guitar, and his other brothers collected large crates of vinyl records filled with old-school hip-hop, breakbeats, R&B, soul, and pop. They owned Technics 1200 turntables and a microphone, and they practiced DJ techniques every day. At the same time, Rogers’ mother played gospel music throughout the home. This combination of influences created a musical environment that was both diverse and deeply rooted in tradition.

Rogers also found inspiration outside his home. Whenever he visited his aunt, he would spend time playing her piano, exploring melodies and learning by ear. Wanting to grow further, he began taking weekly guitar lessons at a local music shop that offered instruction. Soon after, he added piano lessons. The piano became the instrument that allowed him to fully understand harmony, arrangement, and musical direction, and it would remain central to his professional identity.

Faith played a defining role in shaping his discipline and purpose. Rogers came from a strong Christian family. His grandfather, originally from the southern United States, was a preacher, and several aunts and uncles served as pastors and ministers. As a child, Rogers attended church every week with his mother at the Greater Refuge Temple in Harlem, New York. His routine included Sunday morning worship, Sunday evening services, Wednesday night Bible study, Friday night choir rehearsal and service, and Saturday evening service. These experiences gave him constant opportunities to perform and learn within a structured environment.

He sang in the youth choir and played the drums before eventually moving to the piano. Church leaders and musicians recognized his dedication and encouraged his development. Older musicians took him under their guidance, teaching him how to support singers, listen carefully, and approach music with responsibility rather than ego.

During his years at PS 10 Junior High School and Middle College High School, Rogers became known for playing both drums and piano whenever possible. His ability to handle multiple instruments led him to explore the technical side of music. He began learning to program and create sounds using equipment such as the Yamaha SY-85 synthesizer workstation, the Ensoniq ASR-X Pro, and the MPC 3000 drum machine. Through this process, he studied sampling, sound design, and how to build tracks from the ground up. These skills marked his transition from performer to producer.

Rogers later enrolled at LaGuardia Community College to study music, strengthening his technical understanding. He eventually chose to leave college to focus entirely on building a professional career. He began touring with local and emerging artists, gaining practical experience that taught him how to adapt to different musical settings and audiences.

Over time, those opportunities expanded into work with established performers, including Angie Stone, Carl Thomas, Lyfe Jennings, Missy Elliott, Raheem Devaughn, and Trin I Tee 5 7. Touring gave Rogers insight into how live sound connects with listeners, an understanding that would later influence his studio production style.

As a producer and keyboardist, Rogers has contributed to recordings by Fantasia, Keyshia Cole, Remy Ma, Jadakiss, Chris Brown, Lloyd Banks, Big Noyd, and Joell Ortiz. His credits include producing the song Change on Lloyd Banks’ Rotten Apple and producing tracks such as So Much Trouble and Its A Wrap on Big Noyd’s Illustrious. He performed as a keyboardist on Let It Go from Keyshia Cole’s Just Like You and on Two Weeks Notice from Fantasia’s album Fantasia.

Rogers also worked as part of the production duo Prince and Machavelli alongside Spank Machavelli. Under this partnership, they received production credit on Joell Ortiz’s The Brick Bodega Chronicles for the track Block Royal. His gospel contributions include extensive work on Manifest’s Highest Praise, where he served as arranger, programmer, and instrumentalist, as well as musical contributions to Emmanuel Baptist Church’s Just Praise project.

His work across genres has earned Grammy nominations and platinum certifications through his involvement in commercially released recordings. These recognitions reflect not only technical skill but also the trust placed in him by artists and collaborators.
