Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro appeared to defend his actions in sacking a police chief that was promptly followed by the resignation of former justice minister, Sergio Moro. The president spoke at an April 2020 cabinet meeting in Brasilia, in a video released by Brazil’s Supreme Court recently.
“I’ve tried to change our security people in Rio de Janeiro officially, and I wasn’t able to. That’s over. I won’t wait for my family or my friends to get screwed. If one cannot change the law enforcement official, one changes the boss. If not his boss, then the minister. Period,” said Bolsonaro.
As Bolsonaro’s sons remain under investigation over alleged wrongdoings such as money laundering and criminal misinformation, the video was released as part of an investigation into the president sacking the chief of the federal police due to alleged inability to get from him the information regarding the investigation.
Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing.
