The Science of Intuition

Intuition has become a very popular point of discussion in recent times, and although intuition is widely accepted, it is also greatly misunderstood.  In my experience, intuition has provided very accurate validation and information that is useful to myself and my clients, however, explaining how it works has proven to be a challenge.  Let’s first look at some definitions of intuition to get a basic understanding of what this ability might be.  One description is stated as: “Intuition is defined for the purposes of this analysis as: the appearance in the mind of accurate information about the external world, which can be shown to have come not through the five senses, nor through a rearrangement of stored memory contents.”  (Bernstein, 2005).  An additional definition from the readings is stated as: “Intuition is the process in which we are aware of the results of our thinking process but not aware of the steps that we took.”  (Bernstein, 2005).  These, and other definitions, basically state that there is an invisible awareness that seems to pervade our consciousness, that provides information and insight that is not necessarily tangible to our three-dimensional awareness.  The scientific community has made great strides towards quantifying this invisible force, which has truly helped to strengthen and validate this innate human skill set. Let’s navigate this scientific research by discussing two different intuition processes: Discrimination and Body Kinesthetic Intelligence.

As a metaphysical practitioner, I align well with both processes, however, the most common pathway to my intuition is by Discrimination.  When I first encountered the word discrimination in the text, it did not resonate very well, however, the following quote from our readings helped to clarify and validate what I normally encounter personally. “Another state of mind is discrimination. “A reading is like observing a huge, moving, transforming mural: the client’s health, relationships, family, joys and challenges, future—they’re all there.  So discerning what’s important among all that is essential.” (Mayer, 2008, p. 52).  I like to call this the pink elephant dilemma or something akin to the game of Pictionary.  Working with a client generally results in pictures, symbols, all rolled up in what is like watching a movie or film.  Sometimes what I am “seeing” for someone, or even I, is no different than imagining a pink elephant and trying to decipher what that means. Over the years of learning the symbology of my spirit guides, I have been able to interpret the received imagery.  However, receiving information this way also involves other senses as outlined in our readings: “…intuition speaks to us through images (or symbols), feelings, emotions and physical sensations.”  Emotions and sensations are very present during this type of “download” for a client, which really creates a strong personal connection to the interpretation of the message.

The other process of Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence strongly resonates with my connection to the spirit world, universe, cosmos, or whatever one would consider the source of everything.  The basic premise of the readings resonates with the focus of our consciousness that pulls us away from the part of our mind that is more deliberate and continuously aware.  I would suggest that we are primarily speaking about the roles of the conscious and the subconscious parts of the mind. The actions of the conscious mind are normally the processes of deliberate actions and thoughts, while our subconscious mind is the automatic actions based on the programming provided through hypnosis and experiences of life.  For example, we learned to walk using the efforts of the conscious mind; however, the subconscious mind absorbed, recorded, and programmed automatic actions to facilitate walking.  In essence, the subconscious mind operates our life to a percentage of over 90% of our daily activities, without any need for conscious effort.  The authors are suggesting and pointing to that “zone” that we can learn to achieve to tap into this automatic piece of our consciousness, to create outcomes that seem nearly impossible to the conscious mind.  The author describes an event during a hockey game, and I can relate this story wholeheartedly to my role as a soccer goalkeeper.  My experience playing this position demonstrated very powerful and amazing feats of athleticism that were literally invisible from my conscious memory, while at other times, my actions seemed to manifest in slow motion like I was moving through the goal save as if I could envision every action around me. The longer I played in this position, the greater my actions became, without any memory of purposefully doing those actions.  This also happens during routine meditation, essentially there are areas of the brain that go offline, the areas that link us to our normal reality boxed within our five senses.  “Those bundles of neurons located in the poster superior parietal lobe, the region of the brain that’s critical to orienting us in the physical world.” (Mayer, 2008, p. 65).  Other major meditation leaders have related the body as being the subconscious mind, that part of us that is the hub of connection to all there is.  (Joe Dispenza [2020]: Your body is the subconscious mind | [must know], 2020).  Research has also suggested that “…the heart could function either as a perceiver or a transducer of intuitively-acquired information for the brain.” (Bernstein, 2005).

Although the discussion so far relays some grand and amazing ways that intuition and insight come to fruition, there are surely some downfalls and weaknesses inherent in processing this information within the human dynamic.  Chapter 4 of Extraordinary Knowing discussed much of the struggle to make sense of the cosmic downloading of information.  I can speak from experience that it took some time to trust the process of enlightenment and receiving messages from the universe.  The human dilemma is rampant with the desire to second guess new information, trust what we are getting, and allow the process to unfold without effort.  It took me years to reach a point where these inherent human barriers became dormant enough to allow a proper understanding of the language of the universe.  To allow the process to happen, you must realize that you must learn to relax while receiving information and understand that sometimes you simply trust that you know what you know.  Of course, getting validation of your downloads is an important part of building trust with this gift, and I have found that the more I trust, the more validated I become.  In my opinion, the biggest obstacle for enhancing the gift of universal knowledge is simply our own ego and human emotional programming.  Once we learn to get out of our own way, this makes a way for the universe to work through us, and not because of us.

The scientific community is paving the way for validated confirmation for the art of intuition, primarily through the enhancement of research within Quantum Physics and Quantum Mechanics.  Laborious amounts of research and documentation seem to demonstrate that there are many other realities and dimensions outside of the reality that we are currently tuned in to. Within our readings for this week, the main topic I wanted to discuss was the connection we have through our DNA.  I am surprised that none of our readings this week discussed our connection to the cosmos through our pineal gland.  This is a small pea-sized gland that is in the center of our brain, but the real surprise is that it consists of the same structures that make up our eyes. (“Pineal gland activation: A complete guide to opening your third eye,” 2020) Why would our creator put something that could “see” in a dark space?  This is where our intuition is primarily processed, our dreams are funneled through, and our wake/sleep cycles are processed.  Much deliberation has surfaced that this gland can become crystallized because of our water and food supplies, therefore stopping our connection abilities. I am over 60 years old, and I have the great ability to connect to “the other side” quite well, so if my pineal gland is calcified, where would this connection happen?  I did some research prior to this paper and found great alignment with the research discussed in the readings this week.  Most of the research validates that we have only been able to map about 3% of our DNA and the remainder was mostly written off as junk DNA.  Within our readings this week, it is quoted that we have only mapped about 3%, however, the following quote is very intriguing: “DNA’s characteristic double-helix structure makes it intriguingly apt to participate in information transfers….”. (Bernstein, 2005).  I was incredibly interested in this topic a couple of years ago and found some interesting facts.  The biggest surprise to me was how much data DNA can store; I will quote my own article: “…1 gram of DNA can hold approximately 700 Terabytes of information.  There appear to be about 50 total grams of DNA in the human body.” (Mazak, 2019).  Although I am not a scientist, I can assume that with that much storage available, we are likely a walking cosmic internet.  My working theory is that those of us gifted enough to receive information from outside our normal sensors simply can tap into the knowledge of the universe that is stored within each of our cells.

Whatever methodology you choose to document or validate the ability to receive extraordinary information, there is clearly a pathway, or multiple pathways, that we gather knowledge only known outside of our normal senses. When clients or students ask me to teach them how to connect to this source, my normal response is that I do not know how it happens, only that it happens.  However, the real secret has blossomed from the practice of learning to trust the messages and pay great attention to the information that we are receiving every second of every day.  Only then can we truly learn to evolve and connect with all there is?
