Satellite Phones To Politicians! Internet Down?

Senators issued satellite phones, offered demonstrations on upgraded security devices

The satellite phone technology has been offered to all 100 senators. CBS News has learned at least 50 have accepted the phones, which Senate administrative staff recommend senators keep in close proximity during their travels. 

In testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee last month, Senate Sergeant at Arms Karen Gibson said satellite communication is being deployed “to ensure a redundant and secure means of communication during a disruptive event.”  

Gibson said the phones are a security backstop in the case of an emergency that “takes out communications” in part of America. Federal funding will pay for the satellite airtime needed to utilize the phone devices.

A Department of Homeland Security advisory said satellite phones are a tool for responding to and coordinating government services in the case of a “man-made” or natural disaster that wipes out communication.

Volcanoes are erupting, spewing ash on these three continents

Active volcanoes prompted ash warnings and set nerves on edge in Italy, Mexico and the Democratic Republic of Congo over the weekend.

Mount Etna showered ash over Catania in eastern Sicily Sunday and forced the temporary suspension of airport operations. Ash also briefly closed Mexico City’s largest airport and the eruption of Volcano Popocatépetl prompted officials to urge people to avoid traveling near it.

The Nyamulagira volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo also continued ongoing activity and lava flow.

Typhoon Mawar Could Be Guam’s Strongest In 20 Years With Potentially Catastrophic Storm Surge, Winds, Flooding Rain

• A strong typhoon is headed toward Guam.
• Peak impacts are expected Wednesday, local time.
• Dangerous storm surge flooding, high winds and flash flooding from heavy rain are all expected.
• This could be the strongest typhoon to pass so close to Guam since 2002.

  Rota, an island about 40 miles north-northeast of Guam.

  A​nd while the Mariana Islands are in the most immediate danger, Mawar also has an uncertain future after striking Guam that could eventually pose a threat to other parts of the western Pacific Basin next week.

  The earliest day, Pentecost Sunday took place was on May 10th (in 1818) and the latest possible date for Pentecost is June 13th (in 2038). This year the Pentecost Sunday will be observed on Sunday, May 23rd.
