Top 5 Spots to Snap in Australia

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Obviously a huge part of traveling and experiencing new places is documenting them on your blog, for your own personal photo collection or getting your photography chops up. These days the prices of camera gear has made it possible for ordinary people to take great shots. But you still need a good eye and beautiful landscapes to fill those lenses. Australia has more than its fair share of gorgeous vistas. From beaches and deserts, to tropical rainforests, no matter which part of the country you travel to, you’re sure to capture some of that amazing blue sky and natural wonders along the way. If you’re not sure where to start, here are our top 5 spots to snap in Australia.

1) The Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road (Victoria)

The Great Ocean Road is a spectacular 243 kilometre stretch along the Victorian coast from Torquay to Portland. If you’re into road trips, put this one on your list! You’ll go past Bell’s Beach (Australia’s most famous surf beach – anyone remember Point Break?), as well as Apollo Bay, Cape Bridgewater and Cape Otway. But the most beautiful landmarks to snap up are the 12 Apostles. These majestic rock formations rise up out of the ocean, just off the coast. The best times to take photographs of the 12 Apostles are at sunrise or sunset.

2) Cradle Mountain (Tasmania)

If you’re into hiking, one of the best spots to capture wilderness pixels is Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. The Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park was World Heritage Listed back in 1982. Dove Lake sits at the foot of the mountain above which the rugged peak cuts the sky. While sunrise and sunset are prime photography times, the light is constantly changing and you’ll be sure to catch some beautiful shots at any time of day. If you’re curious about Australia’s wildlife, walking through the national park, you’ll catch black cockatoos in the treetops, and echidnas, wallabies and wombats meandering through the undergrowth.

3) Kakadu National Park (Northern Territory)

Kakadu National Park is World Heritage Listed for both its natural and cultural value. Aboriginal people have lived in the area for around 40,000 years and there are over 5,000 sites of Aboriginal art found in the national park. The park covers almost 20,000 square kilometres in the Alligators Rivers Region in Australia’s Northern Territory. Take in majestic waterfalls, rocky outcrops, floodplains and billabongs, and ancient sites of Aboriginal rock art. Of course you can also snap some amazing wildlife, from parrots and lorikeets, to bandicoots, kangaroos, frogs and crocodiles.

4) Uluru (Northern Territory)

No doubt you’ve heard of Australia’s ‘big rock’. Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) is an immense sandstone rock formation in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta national Park. It’s 3.6 kilometres long, 1.9 kilometres wide and stands 348 metres high. The surface of the rock has been carved by thousands of years of wind and rain into beautiful textures. The amazing thing about photographing Uluru is how the colour of the rock changes according to the light and the weather. Sometimes it can be a really deep red or dusky orange, while at other times Uluru takes on a soft purple hue. Tip: you might want to invest in a wide-angle lens for this one, and yes, sunrise and sunset are the best times to snap away.

5) Opera House (Sydney)

The Sydney Opera House is one of Sydney’s major cultural centres, and one of the world’s most distinctive buildings.  Designed by Danish architect, Jan Utzon, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the white sails are synonymous with the harbour side city. Spectacular at any time of day or night, there are myriad vantage points to capture this iconic landmark on camera. Good spots to snap the Sydney Opera House include Circular Quay, up close on the forecourt, or for a different perspective, catch a ferry crossing the harbour.
