Moving back to Korea
In my photography travel journal today I spoke about our probable return to Korea. In truth, we both miss the place. We are craving normalcy, or stability in some sense.
While our time on the road has been nothing short of brilliant, we want to experience, for however long, a healthy routine. We want to socialise regularly with friends and have access to a gym. We want to be able to cook healthy meals and sleep in our own bed more often than not.
Travelling can be intensely fulfilling, but at the same time it can be demanding. While you experience so many great things, you also find yourself exhausted. You pull yourself from pillar to post in search of adventure and at some points you realise you just want to go to sleep for a couple of days in your own bed to recover.
The challenge is finding a balance that suits your lifestyle. We know, for example, that we don’t want to be in England. But at the same time, we are, as I’ve already mentioned, looking for a relatively ‘normal’ life. Korea, as we’ve experienced previously, can provide us with that and the added possibility of adventure, not just on the peninsula but also to the surrounding countries, many of which I haven’t visited.
The main choice we have to make is occupational. Rachel is definitely happy to teach again, while I’m unsure. Teaching was a great challenge but it didn’t thrill or excite me. I may work on our various internet sites and photography instead. Having said that, from a financial point of view, it makes far more sense that I do teach as the potential to save money over there is huge.
This time around I’m going to make a concentrated effort to learn Korean. No more bumbling our way around simple tasks like paying bills or buying pants. The language is incredibly difficult but I’m sure the rewards would be great if we were to have some grasp in it.
Just writing this down and making the decision feels good. It gives us more direction. It’s hard to enjoy things fully when you have so much uncertainty about your life.
