7 American Foods you Must Try
I adore food. After living stateside for a few years in my youth I have to confess that I am a big fan of American food, they do some dishes simply far better than anywhere else in the world.
Now, they do have a tendency to enlarge the portions and my first year living just outside New York City saw me gain 20 pounds but trust me, it was a delicious 20 pounds.
Hiring a car and driving around America is a fabulous experience and the roads are easy to navigate and most vehicles automatic so just ensure you have an international license before heading off to sample to new foods up and down the country!
The Grease Trucks
If you are anywhere near New Jersey you have to try the infamous Grease Trucks of New Brunswick. Hire a car and head to this University campus so you don’t miss an opportunity to try your first ‘fat-cat’ sandwich or a ‘Full Moon’ burger.
The Grease Trucks are a group of food vendors who gather on College Avenue and serve mouth-watering, taste smacking subs made up of mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, burgers, blue cheese and other weight inducing tasty ingredients. These sandwiches have achieved fame all over the states with mentions in Maxim and the New York Times and, in my view; you simply shouldn’t go stateside without giving one a try.
Southern Sensations
Different parts of American are famed for different delightful dishes. Drive down to the Deep South to sample deep fried chicken and creamy mash potatoes that your mama never managed to make. It is the same type of chicken we get in the UK and similar potatoes but those southern cooks do something to it that ensures you will never look at a feathered bird in the same way again.
Picking at Pretzels
Every food store in America sells a form of Pretzels, some present them in a bag or you can find them large and hanging from a prong. You cannot go far without seeing one of the nation’s favourite snacks. After extensive research, I can assure you the only place to go to eat the most amazing Pretzel is the corner of 34th Street and Seventh Avenue in New York City. A small cart that emits the most sensational aromas can be found there and if you have a dollar you can treat yourself to a super sized salt coated pretzel which will cause you to scorn at the bagged variety for ever more.
The Perfect Pizza
I am going to go controversial with this recommendation but my travels have taken me through Italy and the United States and I have sampled pizza in both lands and for me the Americans win hands down. California has some incredible pizza restaurants, personally I would recommend you pop the roof down on the car and drive over to The Good Pizza in LA as they have the most amazing four cheeses special but I have enjoyed stupendous pizza’s on both the East and West coast.
In Italy the more expensive the pizza the better the taste, yet in the states the opposite seems to apply, grab a slice as you go for 99 cents and you will find yourself full up for the day and with a smiling tummy. It proves the theory that good tasting food needn’t break the bank.
Author: Jane Blackmore is a freelance writer who loves her food and doesn’t hide it (quite often the waistline gives her away) she is based from the UK but travels whenever possible with her three children.
