How to Drive Better: 10 Weird (And Life-Saving) Tips to Become a Better Driver

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Did you know getting in a car accident is a very easy way to get yourself killed?

About 1.3 million people die in car accidents every year. So hopefully, these numbers make you want to become a safer driver.

But you probably heard all of the same and boring advice from your parents and driver’s ED teachers. But there are some unheard of rules when getting behind the wheel of a car.

If you want to know how to drive better, remember these 10 weird driving tips.

Drive safe!

1. Your Car Shouldn’t Be Visible in Your Mirrors

You probably pay attention to your rear-view mirror and adjust it like crazy. But what about your side-view mirrors? You probably mess with them every once in a while or maybe you never even adjusted them at all.

To properly see your blind spots, make sure your car isn’t visible in your side-view mirrors. This will give you a large range of vision when you need to switch lanes or do any activity where it’s necessary to see your blind spots.

2. Pay Attention to the Traffic and Not Road Signs

We pay too much attention to road signs. It’s obvious why — it was drilled into our heads during driver’s ED.

But do you pay attention to the traffic around you? Maybe when a cop is following your tail, and that’s if you don’t have an undetectable radar detector.

The best way to avoid an accident is paying more attention to the actual traffic than the sign.

Let’s take the speed limit for example. If you’re a driver who tends to be a lead foot, you often see a speed limit sign and are reminded that the speed limit is 10 miles lower than what you’re driving.

But what if every other car is driving the same speed you are?

If you suddenly slow down, you risk being hit.

The accident risk becomes more severe when you’re driving slowly in the left lane on a busy street, the lane that’s famous for being the speeding lane.

3. Listen to Certain Genres of Music

Maybe in driver’s ED, you were told listening to certain types of music makes you a reckless driver. But you probably shrugged it off. You want to listen to the music you like while driving.

Listening to certain styles of music will make you want to drive faster and recklessly. But the music genres that influence reckless driving are the unsuspecting ones.

The worst music genre to listen while driving is *drum roll please* techno.

Compulsive fist pumping aside, techno is dangerous because it increases your heart rate which will make you more excited. Which means when the beat drops, you’ll want to drive faster and crazier.

What’s the best genre of music to listen to while driving? The answer is also surprising: no music. That’s right — dead silence will leave you to relax and better concentrated. But if you have to listen to music, just don’t listen to techno.

4. Always Leave Your Headlights On

Wait — really? Doesn’t that kill the car’s battery? Probably — but it also reduces your risk of getting in a car accident. By a whopping 32 percent.

The answer to why is simple: your car is lit up and you’re more visible. Visible headlights also wake up sleepy drivers, forcing them to focus.

So why don’t more drivers use their headlights all of the time? We’re taught to use headlights during the evening or during a storm. But this is required by law so drivers feel compelled to drive with their headlights only when it’s necessary.

5. Always Use Your Emergency Brake — Even When Parked On Flat Land

Yes, when you’re parked on flat land there’s a near impossible chance your car will drift off. But that’s not the reason you should always use your emergency brake. If you don’t use it often, your emergency brake won’t work as well.

The best way to get into the habit of using your emergency brake is using it constantly, even when it’s not necessary.

6. Don’t Brake When You Tire Blows Out

All drivers have experienced this issue — you’re in the middle of driving when all of a sudden your tire blows out.

What’s a driver’s first reaction? You slam on the brakes.

But if you brake after a tire blows out, your car will go completely out of control — especially when driving at high speeds.

The best course of action is decreasing your speed enough to where you can slowly brake and park at the side of the road.

7. Take a Defensive Driving Course

But wait — you already passed driver’s ED at 15 years old. Why should you take another driver’s class? Well, do you remember the speed limit in a residential zone? Or which way your wheels should be turned when parked uphill?

Take a defensive driving course every year. This will refresh your memory and will also reduce the cost of car insurance.

8. Never Rely on Car Mirrors or Cameras

Cars today are nifty. They have cameras to help us back up and mirrors to better help us see our blind spot. But don’t 100% trust them. Glance at the mirrors and camera, but also look back and to the side.

9. Keep Your Hand at the Proper Wheel Position

Where do you place your hands on the steering wheel? If you can’t answer this question without actually being in the car, you’re probably doing it wrong.

The right answer is keeping your hands slightly lower than the middle of the wheel. This gives you more control and is actually better for your hands and wrists.

10. Never Brake While Hydroplaning

If you never endured the terror of hydroplaning, let’s hope it never happens to you. But when your car is gliding on water, in the pouring rain, and you can’t control the vehicle, you resort to braking.

But this will actually make your car glide even more. Instead, try and straighten out the wheel. This will give you more control than simply screaming and praying for your life.

Now You (Hopefully) Know How to Drive Better

Driving is necessary but can be scary. With blind spots, drunk drivers and on-road car issues, it’s easy to get into an accident.

To ensure your safety, everyone should know how to drive better. These tips may sound strange but they could save your life.

And having driven over 2.5 million accident free miles, there are more tips that are even better!

      11. Always look as far ahead as you can see when driving, especially out on the freeways..
If you can see a mile ahead, then watch a mile ahead of you.. This makes you aware of
any problems well ahead of time. Those who watch the road right over their hood, are
going to run up on a problem way too many times and collide with others.. So watch
as far ahead as you can.

      12. Move your eyes constantly around to be aware of your surroundings at all times. It requires
almost no effort to move your eyes, so take advantage of that and scan around your
mirrors every few seconds to keep yourself aware of what is going on front, behind and
both sides of your vehicle. Being aware, = no surprises..

      13. Don’t trust traffic to stop at a red light. Figure that cars coming at a red light are going to run
that light. I have seen people get t-boned way too many times, by trusting that the driver coming
at the red light are going to stop, and they run the light, you are dead meat! Never trust that they
are going to stop. The rule here is go when the way is clear, and it’s up to you to make sure that
they way is clear.. Wait for them to stop, unless you are way ahead of them. If they are timed
to get to the intersection at the same time as you driving through it, wait for a second to make
      sure they stop.

      14. Don’t drive on ice. Snow is driveable, ice is not. No matter what, you should not drive in icy
conditions. It’s not worth it. If you are out on a trip, stop and get a room, go to a restaurant
for a nice meal, then go take a good sleep session in. Ice will ruin your life if you let it.

      15. Never drive into smoke, or in fog if at all possible.. It is best to stop and not enter the smoke or
fog. Pull over immediately on the shoulder and creep slowly to the next exit. Stay off of the roadway.
Many people get killed by driving into smoke or fog. Don’t be a statistic, be smart.. Lights on, emergency
flashers on, creep towards the next exit at 20 mph or so and keep those eyes glued to the path ahead.
If you come up on some vehicle parked, you want to be able to stop before you hit them. So judge your
creeping speed accordingly. Be able to jerk the wheel to the right and go into the grass if necessary to
avoid hitting someone.. DO NOT STOP, until you are off of the roadway off of an exit. Even stopping
on a shoulder is very dangerous.. best to creep ahead and stay with your wheels as far to the right of
the shoulder as possible, until you reach an exit, and get off of the road.

      16. Always expect that the worst case scenario will happen. If you plan that the worst will take place,
there will be no surprises.. For instance, someone has their right blinker on and are going to turn
right on the street you are coming out of. Don’t trust that they are going to really make that right.
They may be planning to turn right a the next driveway or street past where you are coming out of.
So if you believe they are turning right, and you go .. Kapow, you guessed wrong! Don’t trust that
scenario.. Let them turn first, then pull out.. It only takes you a second longer, and you will live
another day that way. Also when driving down the freeway, don’t trust that the car or truck in
the lane next to you will stay in that lane.. Watch their front wheels and either you pass them,
or let them pass you.. DO NOT ride next to anyone when traveling on a freeway.. Make sure
you are staggered and not traveling right next to anyone. If they should have a blowout, you
are dead meat, especially if a truck has a blowout..(the explosion of a truck tire is almost like
a stick of dynamite going off)..

      17. Use common sense.. Don’t text and drive, don’t drink and drive, don’t speed excessively, don’t
look at your passenger while driving and talking. Watch where you are going, pay attention.
Don’t let anything distract you. You are doing the most important thing of the day when you
are driving, so be a responsible, smart driver, and you will live a longer life!

    • Counter Analysis

Never ever use cruise control on wet, snowy or icy roads.

Don’t drive too fast for conditions. Determine a safe speed and go a little slower as a safety buffer.

If your tired, pull over in a safe area and sleep for 15 or more minutes.

Never stop on the shoulder or side of the road unless it is an absolute emergency.

Don’t take morons and idiots personally. It’s like banging your head against the wall. View traffic as the collective of all people, some of who will do stupid, offensive, and dangerous things. You will be abused. Accept it as inevitable and move on in peace.

Never be in a hurry. Discipline yourself to leave early so you are not rushed or stressed.

Always glance over your shoulder before changing lanes. Failure to do so is guaranteed to eventually cause an accident.

Don’t rush into the intersection as soon as the light turns green. Give a brief moment to make sure no one is blowing the light.

Keep track of the vehicle behind you. If they are tailgating, leave yourself extra space to slow down gradually so they wont slam into you.

Don’t drive in someone’s blind spot. If you change lanes, do so in a way that everyone is aware of your presence.

Don’t aggravate other drivers. If someone wants to get around you, make it easy for them. Don’t drive slow in the left lane.

If someone is being an ahole and blocking the left lane, disengage and back away. They are likely being sadistic, but when you back off and show indifference, they cease to pay attention to you and a gap will soon open up for you to get around them.

If you get pissed and start losing control, pull over and relax for a few minutes. Driving can be stressful. Recognize your mental state and do what you must to calm down.

If traffic is particularly chaotic or dangerous, turn off the music and avoid conversation. Focus all your attention on the task at hand.

Realize that all your dangerous maneuvers and speeding aren’t likely to save you more than 5 minutes on an hour long trip.

Try to avoid dangerous driving circumstance whenever possible. These include rush hour, bad weather, and drinking holidays.

When approaching railroad tracks, ALWAYS wait for the car in front to cross and leave enough room for you, before you cross.

Try to avoid clusters of traffic. Leave yourself plenty of space in front and to the sides.

Always put your flashers on if you are stopped on the shoulder or side the road. This is critical in the fog. Another vehicle or truck may otherwise slam into you not realizing that your are stopped until it is too late.

Never make an illegal U-turn, or back up if you make a wrong turn. Simply drive to the next exit or place where you can safely turn around. If you are confused, pull over somewhere safe and legal, and set up google maps with directions to your destination.
