9 Weird Garage Items You Never Thought You’d Find in a Household Garage

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Most people use their garage as a place to put their car. Others think they can turn their garage into the ultimate game room while still more people let their garage become a bit of a mess.

It’s hard to tell where the floor is in certain garages or to make sense of everything that’s in there! But, there could be a logical explanation for this – like if there’s only one small garage for a big family or if the homeowners are redesigning one of the rooms. Or, the garage could just belong to some pretty weird people.

Here are 9 of the weirdest garage items that some homeowners put in this part of the house.

1. Canned Food

Food should be stored in the kitchen and nowhere else. It’s not like we’re living in war times anymore when people used to keep canned food in their basement. Not to mention, if you do have an emergency supply of canned food, you should probably put it somewhere it’d be more accessible.

If you’re just stocking up for a rainy day or no reason at all, though, that’s weird. It’s better to donate all the extra canned food you have or at least put it in the pantry where it belongs.

2. Spare Refrigerators

Keeping a spare refrigerator in the garage isn’t too weird if you just recently bought a new one and you’re waiting for someone to pick up the old one. If you have a random refrigerator just sitting in your garage, though, you have a problem.

There’s no use in letting an old appliance take up much space. It doesn’t serve a purpose to you anymore, and it sticks out like a sore thumb against everything else in your garage.

3. Wine

Another interesting food item that ends up in some garages is wine. Your garage is not a wine cellar. If you really want to save a few bottles of wine for a later date, get a small wine cooler.

This is the much classier alternative to sticking your beer and wine in the garage for a few months. Not to mention, it would be a shame if the wine were to break in there or if you were to forget about it altogether.

4. Electronics

Leaving electronics in the garage may sound kind of normal, but it’s pretty weird when you think about it.

Why let your old TV collect dust if you can just sell it? Why tell yourself you’ll use that old Xbox if you just bought the new one? You’re better off letting go of these things than letting them take up space in your garage.

In fact, the sooner you get rid of them, the better. You can make a profit by selling old, gently used electronics. But the second these things start to seriously wear and tear, you’re out of luck.

5. Car Batteries

Car batteries aren’t exactly everyday electronics, but they’re not items you need to hold on to or stock up on, either. It’s rare for a car battery just to die or give out without warning.

Instead of focusing on whether or not you have a backup battery, put more of your energy into keeping your car in good condition. This eliminates the need to keep a battery in the garage, and it benefits your car as a whole much better.

If you like keeping car batteries and other automotive items in your garage to fix up your car yourself, consider creating a separate space to do that with Victory Buildings. This way, your garage can still be a garage and not some sort of auto shop.

6. Old Paint Cans

Old paint cans are actually pretty common to find in garages, but they’re still weird. Think about it: if you just repainted the kitchen or created an accent wall in your bedroom, you’re probably not going to paint again anytime soon. If you do, chances are it won’t be the same color.

So, save yourself the trouble and get rid of old paint cans now. Return the unopened ones you didn’t use and dispose of the leftover paint in opened cans carefully. The paint in cans could get old or separate anyways, which means you wouldn’t be able to use it even if you did decide to hold onto them.

7. Dirty or Broken Furniture

Speaking of holding on to things you can’t use, how much dirty furniture is sitting in your garage? If you have a bunch of stained couch cushions or a couple of broken dining chairs, it’s time to get rid of what you can’t use and repair what you can.

Maybe you put some of your old furniture in the garage with the thought of turning it into a DIY project. But perhaps it’s been six months, and you haven’t made any progress at all. Either get to work or move on!

The longer you hold on to the things you don’t need, the harder it will be to realize what you could do with brand-new furniture.

8. Old Clothes

Just as there’s no reason to keep old furniture, you shouldn’t have a bunch of old clothes in the garage, either. Clothes can easily become moldy in the garage, anyway. Even if you plan to use your maternity clothes again someday or you can’t let go of your college t-shirts just yet, you’re better off storing them elsewhere.

Putting these clothes in the garage is basically asking for them to be ruined. Donate the items you don’t see yourself wearing ever again and be a little smarter about storing the clothes you do need.

9. Deflated Sports Balls

The final weird garage item you may have in your garage is an old deflated basketball or football. It is possible to save these sometimes. But usually, you’re better off buying a new version and tossing the old one.
