Back pain is a pain in the . . . back.

Approximately 80% of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives. 

Some may experience back pain only on occasion. Others may suffer from a more chronic condition. 

Regardless of how often you experience back pain, you want to be able to relieve it. Here are 5 weird, but effective, tips for back pain.

1. Sleep in a Scarf

This might sound more like a remedy to protect against vampire attacks, but sleeping in a scarf can actually help your back and shoulders. 

If you keep your room chilly at night, you probably sleep under blankets. However, your neck is often still exposed and can get chilled. The body’s reaction is to warm it up by using muscle contractions. This can cause tight muscles in the neck and shoulders and cause pain in your upper back. 

Sleep in a scarf for 3 or 4 days straight to see if your pain melts away. You might find that you sleep better too now that you’re not so tense.

2. Sleep Like a Baby

Another easy way to combat back pain is to change your sleeping position. Lying on your side, curled up in the fetal position is one of the best sleeping positions for easing lower back pain. 

For bonus points, slip a pillow between your legs. Also, remember to switch sides from time to time to keep things even.

3. Talk to a Behavioral Therapist

Wait, shouldn’t that say see a physical therapist? Seeing a physical therapist or chiropractor is a great way to deal with back pain, but that’s not very weird now is it?

So our back pain tip is to talk to a behavioral therapist. Strangely enough, cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to help some chronic back pain sufferers.

It can be as simple as targeting how the patient views physical activity. With a different outlook, the patient begins to participate more in physical activities that naturally reduce their back pain. 

4. Cut Out Sugar

Inflammation is a big culprit in some types of back pain. Thus, if you’re able to cut down on inflammation in the body, you may find relief from your back pain.

One of the biggest offenders in causing inflammation in the body is sugar. Try cutting as much sugar out of your diet as you can for a few days and see how your condition improves.

5. Eat Some Indian Food

Indian food is well known for its strong spices and flavorful dishes. It turns out that it can even provide a bit of pain relief for some people.

The compound curcumin has been found to be effective as a natural pain reliever. Curcumin is found in the spice turmeric, which as you may be guessing, is used quite heavily in Indian cuisine. 

So, branch out and try some new foods. You might find back pain relief in the process!
