1. Witch’s Bottles

Believe it or not, this whacky superstition was incredibly common during the Victorian era. A witch’s bottle was a bottle filled with the fingernail clippings, urine, and hair of a person, along with some other items like strips of cloth or leather.

These were thought to ward off evil and witch’s curses by luring the negative energy away from the target and into the bottle. Believe it or not, quite a lot of these have been discovered over the years.

The most complete example was discovered in London back in 2004. While the seals on these bottles are normally broken, this one was still sealed, which preserved the bottle’s contents incredibly well.

2. Dead Cats

Though it’s not uncommon to find dead animals who had the misfortune of finding their way into a wall and not being able to escape, this is a far more creepy phenomenon.

Along with witch’s bottles, folks in the 17th century would sometimes seal live cats inside the walls of their homes. This was most likely due to their association with witches. Several mummified cats have been discovered over the years.

3. Cameras

There are few things more unnerving than discovering a hidden camera in your home. While it would be comforting to write these incidents off as particularly thorough home security, it’s not hard to imagine them being used for more nefarious ends.

4. Snakes

For one Idaho couple in 2009, their foray into home buying was less than pleasant. Shortly after moving in, they discovered that their house was built over a den of poisonous snakes. Do they have homeowner’s insurance for snake invasions?

5. Murder Victims

It doesn’t get a ton worse than this. Back in 2013, a New York resident discovered the body of a woman who had been missing for 28 years behind a false wall in their home. Talk about a day ruiner!

6. Century Old Ouija Board

In 2016, a construction worker reported finding a 100-year-old Ouija Board in the walls of a home. Imagine checking for proper pipeline corrosion protection and finding this instead. Even if you’re not superstitious, that’s pretty creepy.

7. Dead Babies

The most disturbing item on this list was saved for last. There’s truly nothing more horrifying than this.

There have been several instances of mummified infants turning up in the walls of old homes. No one knows why this happens repeatedly, but suffice to say that there are few more nightmarish scenarios than this one.
