As you might imagine, humans have been constructing various buildings pretty much since day one. But while early structures were little more than temporary shelters, today’s buildings are some of the most wondrous monuments to mankind’s ingenuity ever erected.

From massive skyscrapers to breathtaking religious temples, there’s no shortage of wild and weird buildings populating the world’s skylines. Here’s a quick look at 3 of the weirdest buildings out there.

1. Svalbard Global Seed Vault

Number one on the list is something right out of the pages of a science-fiction novel. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a Norwegian facility that stores thousands of seeds from across the world. Although its Norwegian location makes it part of the long Scandinavian architectural tradition, it’s a far cry from the type of building Vikings seek shelter in.

Located on a remote island in the far northern reaches of Norway, the seed vault was designed as an insurance policy against various forms of global disaster. Should a cataclysmic event wipe out large chunks of human agriculture, the vault has copies of almost a million different types of crops and plants.

First opened in 2008, this building was built right into an abandoned coal mine. Talk about weird!

With its Arctic location, sci-fi appearance, and anti-apocalyptic mission, this is both one of the weirdest and coolest buildings on our list. 

2. Antilia

Named after the mythical island of Antilles, Antilia is the most expensive private residence in the world. With an estimated value of between 1 and 2 billion dollars, this is a seriously lavish abode.

Antilia is located in South Mumbai, India, and is owned by a businessman named Mukesh Ambani. Ambani purchased the land for the building back in 2005, and its construction was completed in 2010.

The home requires a staff of 600 workers to maintain the residence 24 hours a day, and it houses all 600 of them on site. Also, its 27 floors boast extra high ceilings, meaning most buildings of similar height would have closer to 60 floors!

Needless to say, it’s hard to get weirder or more luxurious than this.

3. Ryugyong Hotel

Last but not least, this might be the weirdest building on the list. The Ryugyong Hotel deserves inclusion here if for no other reason than that it’s the tallest unfinished building in the world.

That’s right, this North Korean mega-hotel isn’t even in use. Construction began in 1987 but halted after an economic crisis following the 1992 collapse of the Societ Union.

To this day, all 105 stories of the building remain unused, and there’s no finish line in site. Like many things in North Korea, this is indeed truly weird.
