13 Weird Costumes You Have Got to Try This Halloween

Over 175 million Americans celebrate Halloween each year. They decorate their porches, hand out candy, and dress up in festive costumes.  

Costume ideas range from spooky to sexy to downright strange. Are you looking for something unique that’s sure to impress your fellow Halloween-friends?

1. Big Fat Baby

If you’re looking for ridiculous Halloween costumes, a big fat baby is where it’s at. This one always gets people’s attention…or creeps them out. 

Get the look with a big fat suit and a homemade diaper. Add a giant baby bib, pacifier, bottle, and teddy bear to look like a baby. You can also find these costumes already made online and at your local party store. 

2. Ms. Frizzle

Ms. Frizzle made her debut on the popular Magic School Bus television show. This costume idea is much weirder than being a normal teacher. 

To dress up as Ms. Frizzle, find (or make) a purple dress with a solar system pattern. Put a red frizzy wig on your head and carry around a stuffed lizard. You can also wear jewelry with moons and stars. 

3. It’s Raining Men

This costume idea comes from the hit song by The Weather Girls. It’s easy to make yourself with a raincoat, umbrella, and rain boots.   

Use cardboard cutouts of your favorite Hollywood men, like Ryan Gosling. Hang their face cutouts from the underside of the umbrella using string.  

4. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos

Why not dress up like your favorite snack, Cheetos? This costume is crunchy, spicy, and oh so cheesy. Katy Perry even rocked this costume idea a few years back. 

To make this crazy costume you can use paper mache or orange fuzz. You’ll also need a pair of hot orange tights and heels. Top it off with a homemade purse using an old empty Cheetos bag and some string.  

5. Fast Food Drive-Thru Window

For this one, pick your favorite fast food for costume inspiration. Popular choices include McDonald’s, Taco Bell, or Dunkin Donuts.  

Make a cardboard cutout of the drive-thru window. Decorate it with the name of the restaurant, their logo, and company colors. Then you can add props like fries, burgers, tacos, or donuts.   

Wear an apron and a hat to look like one of their employees. This is also a great couples costume idea. Have your date dress up like a giant piece of food or to-go cup. 

6. Bubble Boy (Or Girl)

Last Halloween, it seemed like everyone dressed up as Fortnite video game characters. This was the most popular costume seen in 43 states. 

Looking to do something different than everyone else this year? Become a bubble boy or girl. These obscure Halloween costumes can get made using a full body suit from bubble wrap. 

It’s a great last-minute costume idea if Halloween falls on a bad weather day. You’ll also be well-protected should you fall down during the festivities.  

7. Ace Ventura

This is an ideal costume for any lover of Jim Carrey. Get your inspiration from his “When Nature Calls” hit movie.  

It’s easy to make this costume with a Hawaiian print shirt, red striped pants, and a belt. Be sure to wear the Hawaiian shirt open with a white tank top underneath for the full effect. 

Style your hair in his traditional look or get a wig. You’ll also want to throw on a pair of aviator sunglasses. Complete the look by perching a stuffed monkey on your shoulder. 

8. Eleven from Stranger Things

Looking for some of the strangest Halloween costumes to make yourself? This idea comes straight from Netflix’s hit show.   

All you need is a pink dress, jean jacket, and a blonde wig. Then throw on some converse sneakers and tube socks to complete the look. You can even carry a box of Eggo waffles for the full effect.  

9. A Bowl of Cereal

Start by making the choice between a bowl of Cocoa Puffs or Captain Crunch. This costume uses a fake paper mache bowl that goes around the lower half of your body.   

Use colored fabric or foam to make large cereal puffs to fill the bowl with. Then use tin foil to make a giant spoon that sticks out from the bowl.   

10. Krumm

Remember the show Aaahh!!! Real Monsters? All nostalgic 90’s kids do…

Krumm was the smelly and hairy monster that everyone loved. Get his look with a nude-colored bodysuit and blue lipstick.

Use yarn or fake hair to make hairy armpits. Then you’ll need some fake eyeballs to hold in your hands. 

Note that your arms will get tired by the end of the night from holding up those eyeballs. This costume may also make it hard to hold a drink in your hand. 

11. A Giant Pretzel

This costume lets you become a delicious Bavarian pretzel twist. You can use paper mache and spray paint to make the pretzel. 

Don’t forget to add some salt. Sculpey polymer clay or bits of fabric will do the trick. Secure the costume to your back using thick straps.  

This idea also works well for weird costumes for couples. Pair it with a pint of beer costume or some creative Oktoberfest attire.  

12. Boxed Wine

This fun costume is easy to make yourself with some arts and crafts. Take a box that is big enough to fit around the middle of your body. Then cut out holes for your head, arms, and torso.  

Decorate the box with your favorite boxed wine label. Franzia, Black Box, and The Naked Grape are all great choices.  

13. Bob Ross 

Remember America’s favorite painter with his own television show? Bob Ross was an expert in trying to instruct others in the art of painting.  

It’s easy to dress up like him with a giant brown afro wig. You’ll also need an artist’s palette and brush. Wear a blue button-up shirt and tight-fitting pants to complete Bob’s look.
