Should I Become an Uber Driver?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Do you love driving? Are you the owner of a relatively new car? Have you been trying to think of ways to bring in a little bit of extra money every month?

If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, you might be a great candidate to become an Uber driver. There are more than 3 million people driving for Uber all across the world right now—and you can join them today if you’re up for it.

Before you officially become an Uber driver, though, it’s important for you to spend some time thinking about if it’s really the right gig for you. Not everyone is cut out to be a driver for the ridesharing company.

Ask yourself the following questions and answer them honestly prior to putting in an application to drive for Uber.

Are You 21, and Have You Been Driving for At Least a Year?

There are a bunch of different Uber driver requirements that you’re going to need to meet to drive for Uber. This is the most basic one of the bunch.

In order to become an Uber driver, you need to be at least 21 years old. You also need to have a driving record that extends back at least one year.

Additionally, those who are under the age of 23 must have a driving record that extends back at least three years. You will not be approved to become an Uber driver if you don’t meet these basic criteria.

Do You Have a Clean Criminal Record?

In addition to being at least 21 years old and having some driving experience under your belt, Uber also calls for their drivers to have clean driving records. This is to ensure that Uber passengers feel safe and comfortable when getting into cars with Uber drivers.

Uber has a screening process in place that disqualifies anyone who appears on the National Sex Offender Registry from becoming an Uber driver. Their screening process also disqualifies those with suspected terroristic ties.

There are many other things that Uber will look out for when evaluating your criminal record, too. They won’t allow you to become an Uber driver if you’ve been convicted for crimes like:

  • DUI
  • Fraud
  • Assault or battery
  • Theft
  • Resisting arrest

One thing worth noting is that Uber only looks at criminal convictions that have taken place within the last seven years. But generally speaking, you should keep your criminal record in mind when you’re considering trying to become an Uber driver since it could hold you back.

Do You Have a Clean Driving Record?

Outside of having a clean criminal record, Uber also looks for drivers who have clean driving records. They want to make sure drivers are going to drive safely when they’re on the clock for Uber.

Uber will take a look at your driving record when you apply to become a driver and check to see if you have any major violations on it. These violations include things like driving on a suspended license or driving without insurance.

If you have these types of violations on your driving record within the last three years, Uber will deny your request to become a driver for them.

They’ll also deny you if you have several minor violations on your driving record within the last few years. These violations include things like accidents, speeding tickets, and other traffic violations.

Think about what Uber might find when they analyze your driving record. If you know you have too many violations on your driving record, you might not be a great fit for Uber.

Are You Equipped With a Smartphone?

Almost everyone is walking around with a smartphone these days. A decade ago, only about 35% of Americans had smartphones. But today, that number has jumped up over the 80% mark.

If you’re going to drive for Uber, you need to have a smartphone in your possession. You’re going to use it to do everything from keep track of your pickups to deposit your earnings into your bank account.

What Kind of Car Do You Drive?

To drive for Uber, you’re obviously going to need to have access to a vehicle. Uber is not going to provide you with a car to make your pickups and dropoffs.

But you’re not allowed to use just any old car to drive for Uber. You need to have a car that meets some basic requirements based on which type of Uber service you plan on providing.

If, for example, you plan to become an UberX driver, you need a four-door vehicle that is a 2002 or newer. It must fit four passengers in it at a time.

But if you’re going to become an UberSUV driver, you need a four-door SUV that is a 2012 or newer. It must fit at least six passengers in it at a time.

See which services Uber offers in your city and make sure you have the right car for the type of service that you want to provide. Otherwise, Uber isn’t going to allow you to start driving for them.

Do You Enjoy Interacting With People?

Technically, you don’t have to say a word to people when you’re picking them up and dropping them off on behalf of Uber. There are many people who will appreciate you not speaking to them when they’re in a rush and trying to get somewhere fast.

But you should be a people person to some degree to become an Uber driver. You should also enjoy going above and beyond to make sure people have a pleasant experience from the second they set foot in your vehicle.
