Research shows Disney was able to make over $1 billion when Toy Story 4 came to theaters in 2019.  It seems like every year, Disney gets it right, releasing films that bring in the big bucks.

However, the reality is Disney wasn’t always so good at creating the perfect movie formula. In their almost 100 years of creating films, Disney Studios has put out some incredibly weird films. The type of films that would never make it to theaters today.

1. That Darn Cat!

First, on our list of weird Disney Movies, we have, That Darn Cat! It’s a 1965 thriller comedy about a mischievous cat called DC (short for Darn Cat).

The adventurous Siamese cat loves stealing food and teasing dogs. However, one day, DC’s laidback life gets serious.

While stalking a human for food, DC stumbles upon bank robbers who’ve kidnapped a local bank employee. Will DC be able to save the day? You’ll have to watch to find out.

2. Candleshoe Starring Jodie Foster

The movie Candleshoe came out in 1977 and it’s a good old family-friendly adventure film. The plot of the movie stars a mischievous orphan, Casey Brown, who gets pulled into a treasure hunt.

Things kick off when a con artist firmly believes there’s a lost pirate treasure hidden at Candleshoe. Candleshoe is a country estate that belongs to Lady St. Edmund.

What Lady St. Edmund doesn’t know is that her cleaning woman at Candleshoe is corrupt. The corrupt cleaning woman is working in cahoots with the ex-con to find and steal the treasure.

Realizing they need help, the criminals involve the streetwise orphan Casey Brown. The plan is to have Casey Brown pretend to be Lady St. Edmunds’s long lost granddaughter. You’ll enjoy watching Jodie Foster play the part of the orphan as she works to help steal the pirate treasure.

3. Return to Oz

One of our favorite weird Disney movies to watch is Return to Oz. The dark fantasy film serves as an unofficial sequel to The Wizard of OZ.

When Dorthy comes back to the Land of Oz, she discovers an evil Nome King is terrorizing the land. It’s up to Dorthy and her super weird new friends, like Jack Pumpkinhead, to overthrow the evil king.

4. The Ugly Daschund

One of the strangest movies of all time has to be The Ugly Daschund. Have you ever met a big dog, who still thinks its the size of a puppy?

In The Ugly Daschund, a Great Dane mistakenly believes he’s a Daschund. You’ll get a lot of laughs as you watch this giant dog try to find his place in the world.

5. The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars

Perhaps you watched The Brave Little Toaster when you were growing up. However, did you know the toaster wound up making his way to Mars?

The original The Brave Little Toaster, tells the tale of household appliances that work together as a team. In the sequel, the owners of the appliances have a baby.

Everything seems to be going great until aliens come and steal the baby! Now, it’s up to the Brave Little Toaster and his friends to get the baby back.

Oh, and did we mention the aliens also want to destroy the Earth? Famous voices in this film include Farrah Fawcett who plays a faucet and Stephen Tobolowski who plays the calculator. 

6. Mr. Boogedy

When you check out Disney plus on Apple TV, you have to give Mr. Boogedy a try. Mr. Boogedy is one of the best Disney movies made for television. An unsuspecting family moves to a new town, only to discover it’s haunted by ghouls and ghosts!

It shouldn’t be a surprise there are ghosts, considering the town’s name is Lucifer Falls. Nevertheless, the children notice the paranormal activity taking place around them, but the parents are oblivious. It’s up to the kids to figure out how to defeat Mr. Boogedy all on their own, while also dealing with other evil spirits.

7. The Misadventures of Merlin Jones

Next on our list of obscure Disney movies, we have The Misadventures of Merlin Jones. The story follows a smart high school boy, Merlin Jones, who creates a machine that can read minds.

Merlin Jones fits right in on our list of weird movies since the young man is a bit of an oddball. The movie includes a chimp kidnapping and getting in trouble with the law.

8. The Country Bears

The Country Bears came out in 2002 and it’s a family-friendly musical comedy film. The inspiration for the film comes from a Disney attraction at one of their theme parks.

The story follows a country-rock band made up completely of bears. The bears act just like humans, and they’re great at making music. You’ll get to enjoy watching the bears visit places like the Swarming Hive Honey Bar, where they agree to enter a band playoff.

There’s also a preteen bear in the movie who was raised by humans but decides to run away from home because he’s not a human. There’s a lot that happens in this movie, and it all qualifies as really weird.

9. Darby O’Gill and the Little People

The 1959 film Darby O’Gill and the Little People is a fantasy adventure film. Darby O’Gill lives in a small Irish town where he works as a caretaker of Lord Fitzpatrick’s estate.

Things get weird when Darby decides to try to capture an entire tribe of Leprechauns. Darby is especially interested in getting his hands on the leprechaun king.

10. The Black Cauldron

The Black Cauldron came out in 1985 and it’s a fully animated fantasy film, with a dark side. The story follows a pig herder, Taran, who dreams of one day becoming a knight. When a future-telling pig gets kidnapped by the evil Horned King, Taran finally gets a chance to prove his worth.
