It’s no surprise that there have been scandals within the Christian faith, but some of these famous pastors involved may have you shocked. Famous pastors in the world may benefit from the spotlight and use it to spread their faith, but it has been used in more nefarious ways as well.

From fraud to sex scandals, these famous Christian pastors have given a new definition to sin, especially when they should be doing God’s will. 

Famous Pastors Caught Being Unchristian

While a pastor seems like someone undeniably good, the position has included some less than ideal candidates, who perceived the commandments far more loosely than they should. Thankfully those caught in unlawful acts often serve to improve the position and the oversight applied to pastors in the future.

1. Paul R. Shanely

Shanely molesting dozens of boys, and was exposed in 2003 when one of the largest sexual assault scandals in the Catholic church broke. In 2005 he was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

2. Joe Barron

Barron was on Dateline before Dateline was a show. He went to meet an underage girl to engage in alleged sexual activities and he met with local law enforcement instead.

3. Paul Jenning Hill

Hill was not as pro-life as he preached since he murdered a doctor and guard at an abortion clinic in 1994. He received the death sentence and was executed in 2003.

4. George Alan Rekers

Rekers got caught in the company of a male sex worker while on a trip. At first, he tried to say the man was helping with his bags, then that Rekers was trying to correct sinful behavior, when in fact he was engaging in the very behavior he admonished. 

5. Creflo Dollar

This pastor and televangelist based in Atlanta was successful beyond his needs. He encouraged his congregation to donate hundreds of dollars each so he could put it toward the purchase of his own private jet. Only for spreading the lord’s good word of course.

6. Peter Popoff

Popoff, one of the very famous pastors on TV, claimed he could diagnose and heal illnesses with the help of God. In reality, he had the help of his wife and a wire. 

7. Earl Paulk

Paulk was the focus of a very famous pastor sex scandal, with his indiscretions lasting decades. It even included a paternity test showing his nephew was in fact his son.

Not What It Seems

These are some of the many cases of pastor scandals.

But not all pastor scandals are as they seem. In this world of fast-paced information spreading it can be easy to encounter false information. Some scandals, like the one with Pastor David Wilson, mentioned in this article could actually be a mistaken identity instead of infidelity.

For God or for Sin

We cannot generalization that the position of a famous Christian pastor breeds scandal and sinful behavior. However, the position certain allows for a certain amount of indiscretion to occur unnoticed or ignored within limits.
