How Does the Tattoo Removal Process Work?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Has one of your old tattoos become a permanent reminder of a bad decision?

Years after getting inked, many people wish that they hadn’t. In fact, one study revealed that 75% of its participants regretted one or more of their tattoos.

If you’re sick of looking at an old piece of art that no longer suits you or fits your lifestyle, it might be time to take action. Keep reading to learn all about the tattoo removal process – and decide if it might be right for you.

How Does Tattoo Removal Work?

Tattoo removal uses laser therapy to fade the pigments put into your skin during the tattoo application process.

Simply put, a specialized laser known as a Q-switched laser sends energy into your skin in a strong pulse. Each pulse heats up the ink embedded in your skin, dissolving it. Then, your body disposes of the particles leaving behind lighter, brighter skin.

This technology works best on dark colors like black, brown, and blue. And, the number of sessions that it takes to achieve full removal will depend on the size and darkness of your tattoo.

It is important to note that people with darker skin tones may opt for a different laser, the Q-switched Nd:YAG. This can help to reduce the risk of accidental scarring.

What Is the Tattoo Removal Process Like?

When you go in for your appointment, a local anesthetic will be applied to your skin to help numb the area where you’ll be having tattoo removal performed. Then, the laser will be applied.

Most patients describe tattoo removal pain as mild, and many compare it to the feeling of a rubber band snapping against the skin. In some cases, blisters and swelling or light bleeding can develop shortly after treatment.

Of course, the cost of tattoo removal will depend on the size of your tattoo being removed and how many sessions are required. On average, it takes between six and seven sessions to fully remove a tattoo. And, you’ll need to wait six to eight weeks in between treatments.

Recovery from tattoo removal is straightforward, and you’ll be given specific aftercare instructions during your office visit. Post care will likely include applying antibacterial ointment to the treated skin for several days and covering the area with a dressing.

It is also recommended that you keep the treated area clean and dry, avoid tight-fitting clothing and direct sunlight, and refuse the temptation to pick at any scabs or blisters that form.
