3 Essential Reasons Your Kids Should Study Religion

An overwhelming majority of Americans identify as having a belief in God. Therefore, should religion be taught in schools?

In public schools, you have to abide by a separation of church and state. The constitution says that the government can’t establish a religion nor prohibit people from worshiping.

Parents can choose to put their children in a private school that specifically teaches religious values. For example, there are Catholic schools al across the country.

However, to study religion in school is a wholly different matter. Let’s look at three great reasons why studying religion could be beneficial in an educational environment.

Before we get into our three great reasons, we should look at the right way and wrong way to introduce religion into the curriculum. First things first — educators can’t emphasize one religion over another.

If parents want kids to discover more about their own beliefs, they can enroll them in studies at their place of worship along with attending services. In the classroom, each religion has to be given equal time and follow a strictly educational program.

Teaching about the many religions and beliefs that people have helps children better understand their neighbor. Understanding another’s perspective helps to decrease conflicts and promotes a healthier environment.

Diversity is shown to have positive effects on mental well-being and develop tolerance. It stimulates creativity in students and produces well-rounded adults.

Many events in history have been influenced by religious beliefs. Kids studying religion can gain a better idea as to what motivated cultures throughout history.

Understanding how the world was shaped not just through power, like a kingly decree, or coincidence, like a volcano eruption, adds a deeper level of historical perspective. Your child’s grades will no doubt improve and they will have a better appreciation for significant moments of the past.

3. Improved Grades and Better Prospects

We mentioned that historical perspective is important for overall education. That won’t just extend to your child’s grades in history class, it will help them understand every class they attend.

Many leaps in art and technology were carried out because of religious instruction. Learning about how religion influenced art, math, the sciences, and more will give them a deeper appreciation for their schoolwork.

And once they’re out of school, their future grows brighter. Understand their neighbors’ beliefs and how the world was shaped by religions will improve their job prospects in an increasingly global workforce.
