A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing Ski Gear
Did you know that seven million people went skiing for the 2017/2018 winter season?
Given this number, there’s a high demand for quality ski gear. If you’re a beginner skier, though, it’s not easy to know where to start. Ski equipment is expensive, so it’s something you definitely want to get right.
Before your ski trip, check out this beginner skier guide to ski gear.
Helmet
Out of all your ski equipment, the helmet is something you don’t want to skimp on. It’s integral to preventing head injuries and has no doubt saved the lives of many skiers.
If you don’t have a helmet handy, ski resorts will certainly have them available to rent.
Goggles
Goggles might not seem that important but trust us here. Sunglasses won’t cut it because of the intense UV rays. This glare will come not only from the sun but from the snow.
Whether you are a beginner skier or an expert, you’re still vulnerable to watery eyes. When the sun or snow is that bright, it will cause your eyes to tear up. Assuming it’s below freezing, those tears can aggravate your eyes.
Other than protecting your eyes from sun damage, bringing goggles on your ski trip will keep snow or other foreign objects from flying into your eyes.
Skis
Before going skiing, you need to know what kind of skis you need. This, of course, will depend on the terrain.
Are you choosing ski gear for a backcountry? A groomed, powdered ground? A snowpark? Your answer will determine whether you get wider or narrower skis.
There’s also the length of the skis and the way they curve. No matter the kind of ski gear you need, Norski Sport Rental can help you out. Click here to browse their selection of ski rentals.
Clothing
There’s a lot that goes into your skiing wardrobe than just fashion. You need clothes that will keep you warm and loose, but it needs to keep you dry, too.
That’s why you can’t skimp on your underlayer. Opt for something synthetic so that it dries quickly.
Your base layer should be synthetic as well, or wool. It can be either mid-weight or heavy weight. Wear this underneath a fleece, zip-up jacket. This way, you’ll be plenty warm, but you can always take this extra layer off.
Next, find tall wool socks that won’t slide down when you’re going skiing. Lastly, all other outer layers (like snow pants) should be waterproof and insulated.
Lastly, don’t forget your gloves, which should also be waterproof and insulated. Mittens, while not as flexible, keep you warmer. The choice is up to you, though.
