Eating is such a social event where you can expect to have a good time and interact with others. And while eating is often associated with fun and relaxation, there’s a hidden struggle to it.

There are many different types of eating disorders. The two most common disorders in this category are bulimia and binge eating.

Binge Eating vs Bulimia

The two disorders are very similar. They both involve episodes of overeating followed by attempts to rid the body of the food. But here are a few key differences to note:

Binge Eating Disorder

What is binge eating? Binge eating disorder or BED is a mental illness of uncontrollable, excessive eating followed by feelings of guilt and shame. This is different from overeating or eating large amounts of food on occasion.

It’s a chronic, relapsing disorder that can lead to serious consequences. This eating disorder gives a significantly higher risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and other medical problems. 

Bulimia Nervosa 

There are many questions about this kind of disordered eating. Bulimia nervosa or BN is an eating disorder with symptoms of binge eating followed by purging. This is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition.

Bulimia nervosa is more common in women than men and typically begins in adolescence or young adulthood. If left untreated, this can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and heart failure.

Treating Eating Disorders
