Environmental Pollution from Data Warehouses/Data Centers

Data centers and data warehouses have a significant ecological footprint:

  • Energy & CO₂: Data centers account for roughly 2–3.7% of global GHG emissions, comparable to the aviation industry.  In the U.S., they consume ~200 TWh annually.

  • Water pollution: A notable case in Oregon — Amazon data centers in Boardman pull nitrate-laden groundwater for cooling; the nitrates concentrate as water evaporates, returning wastewater at up to 56 ppm (8× the safety limit) to local fields.

  • E-waste: Data storage hardware produces toxic, non-biodegradable electronic waste.

  • Cooling: Accounts for >40% of electricity usage in most data centers.

The IEA projects data center electricity demand will more than double by 2030 (~945 TWh), with AI already consuming 15–20% of data center power (potentially 40% by 2030).  Goldman Sachs estimates ~60% of that growth will be met by fossil fuels, adding ~220 Mt CO₂ globally.

Bottom line: A typical 50 TB enterprise data warehouse on a fossil-heavy grid emits on the order of 1–5 tonnes CO₂e/year (storage + compute + cooling).  At hyperscale, a single facility can emit 100,000+ tonnes CO₂e/year

    Per-Facility Benchmarks

    Facility Annual water use
1 MW, evaporative cooling ~25.5 million L (~6.7 million gal)
100 MW, evaporative, hot climate 350–500 million gal (~1.3–1.9 billion L)
100 MW, air-cooled, cold climate <50 million gal
Google (fleet average, 2023) ~2.1 million L/day per center
Largest hyperscale campuses Up to 5 million gal/day (~19 million L/day)

    US & Global Totals

Morrow County, Oregon case.  The nitrate-concentrated wastewater from the Amazon data centers (and food processors) is being sprayed onto local farm fields as fertilizer

    Here’s the cycle:

  • Source: Groundwater drawn from the aquifer already carries nitrates from decades of industrial agriculture (chemical fertilizers, animal manure, food-processing runoff).

  • Concentration: When that water cools servers via evaporative cooling, the water evaporates but the nitrates stay behind — leaving a more concentrated brine (up to 56 ppm, ~8× the safety limit).

  • Land application: The Port of Morrow collects this “process water” in lagoons, then pumps and sprays it across area farms at no cost to operators, where the nitrogen acts as a nitrogen fertilizer for crops.

  • Feedback loop: The porous soil saturates quickly, and the excess nitrates percolate back into the aquifer — the same one that supplies drinking water to ~45,000 residents.

  •

The Rolling Stone / FERN investigation (Nov 2025) described it as:

“It is a novel recycling process that alleviates the Port’s wastewater burden and offers farms a steady flow of highly concentrated fertilized water to expand their industrial-ag footprints.”

So it’s a closed-loop waste-as-fertilizer system that simultaneously solves the port’s disposal problem and feeds the farms — but at the cost of progressively poisoning the groundwater that the community drinks from.

Lamb Weston (a major food processor at the port) acknowledged in a statement that “only a very small percent of nitrates, as confirmed by the Oregon DEQ, are attributable to the land application of food processing water” and said it was “improving water treatment to reduce the nitrogen content.”

Amazon denied wrongdoing but paid $20.5 million in a March 2026 settlement to fund private wells and water-treatment projects for affected residents.
