The Giant of Atacama stands 393 feet high and is surrounded by lines similar to those at Nazca.  The Nazca lines are also in the Atacama desert.   Roughly contemporary with Peru’s famous Nazca Lines, around a hundred gigantic figures marked out on the ground by arranging stone formations went unnoticed for centuries.

2010 Sunday July 18, 11.00 am at Radomiro Tomic mine that is located near Calama and three thousand meters above sea level. That day the weather surprised everyone because the winds reached speeds of 140 kilometers per hour that forced work to stop  at least for part of the afternoon. 

This climate phenomenon  surprised everyone. That and to leave a record, two workers who were on board a bus with other operators, decided to record it through a Samsung. According to this video posted on YouTube climbed suddenly appeared a ball of bright light was not in place. The video has more than four minutes of record of how this flying object lands on the mining facilities, changing position at times. Another interesting detail is that the sky is completely clear

At an elevation of 2,260 m (7,400 ft),[3] Calama is the gateway to the geological and archaeological wonders of Chile’s high central desert. Some of these places of interest include: the town of Chuquicamata, the village of San Pedro de Atacama, Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), the Licancabur volcano, R. P. Gustavo Le Paige Archaeological Museum, Los Flamencos National Reserve, the Aguas Calientes salt flat, the Tuyajto lagoon, the El Tatio Geysers, the village of Chiu-Chiu. 

In 2003 the nearby town of Chuquicamata, by one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world, was dismantled, partly because of environmental reasons, and partly due to encroachment from the mine’s expansion. Residents of Chuquicamata then moved to Calama, away from company-owned residences, to find housing on their own.

A “geoglyph” is a very old drawing on the ground and the ones created 1,500 years ago in the Atacama Desert are a traveler’s delight. We visited them on our one-way ride from San Pedro de Atacama to Calama where we would catch an airplane to Santiago the next day.

It’s believed that ancient caravan travelers drew the geoglyphs to show others the route from the high mountains to the coast. It’s also believed they were used for rituals.

From Peru down to Chile, geoglyphs are found either alone or in groups of 50 or more. They range from simple conventional motifs to complex designs.

Today, these age-old drawings made of rocks and gravel express the creativity and thought of a perished, prehistoric Andean culture. Walking among the ruins while completely alone in the desert is a very special experience. We had a feeling that, in that moment, we connected to those who later evaporated under European and Christian domination.

The initial findings from geologists who identified the stones on the ground were taken to theNational Geographic Society, who funded the first stages of a full-scale investigation and various flyovers of the site. Once in the air above Lasana, the northern village nearest the newly discovered geoglyphs, investigators were stunned to look down on an immense array of images on the ground below.

With the information gathered from these flights, as well as visits on the ground and technology from Google Earth, investigators found nearly 100 distinct, abstract figures.

Unlike others found farther north in Chile near Arica, the geoglyphs do not specifically represent people and animals, but are instead harder to define. The largest of the figures identified is more than 680 ft (210 m) in length and nearly 200 ft (60 m) in width. An analytical process has tentatively identified the image as a depiction of two felines facing one another.

Determining its meaning is rendered more difficult still by centuries of human disruption to the site, encouraged and facilitated by the rich mineral resources in the area. A road crosses directly through its center and many of the rocks that constitute it have been displaced over the years.

Other geoglyphs found at the site, some of them designed on a similar scale, are even more abstract, imitating the traditional designs of textiles. All of the newly discovered geoglyphs were created through the same painstaking effort of moving stones, a task requiring an untold number of laborers. Ceramics and other artifacts found in the area suggest that these figures may be up to 1,500 years old; roughly contemporary with Peru’s Nazca Lines. They are suspected to be the work of early desert-dwellers who lived in the oases at modern-day Chiu Chiu, Lasana andSan Pedro.
