Isaiah 17:1 Is Syria War Part Of Jesus' Second Coming? Christians And Muslims Quote Scripture

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The second coming of Jesus is linked with the city of Damascus in both Christian and Muslim scripture, and some are interpreting those verses as an indication that the current Syria conflict points to the imminent return of Christ.

Some Christians point to Isaiah 17:1, which states:
The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. (King James version)

The rest of Isaiah 17 elaborates upon the coming destruction, which some interpret as Armageddon, heralding the return of Christ.

Muslims also believe in the second coming of Jesus, which is mentioned in Surat An-Nisa, which says:
And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in Jesus before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness. (Sahih International translation)

More specifically, these Muslims quote a hadith that relates to Damascus and Jesus’ second coming. Sahih Muslim Book 41, Hadith 7015 says:
…Allah would send Christ, son of Mary, and he will descend at the white minaret in the eastern side of Damascus wearing two garments lightly dyed with saffron and placing his hands on the wings of two Angels.
However, in the Muslim tradition, Jesus descends before the destruction happens.

If you read the Holy Bible carefully, It looks like neither side really wins. Damascus is destroyed and the country listed as Ephraim (USA?) loses its military strength. We may want to delay this war as long as possible.
Jeremiah 49:23 Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet. 24 Damascus is waxed feeble, and turns herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail. 25 How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy! 26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, said the LORD of hosts.
Isaiah 17:1 The burden of Damascus. Behold (look), Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. 2 The cities of Aroer (in Jordan) are forsaken (abandon): they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid. 3 The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim (This descendant of Joseph loses its military stronghold), and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, said the Lord of hosts.
