How Different Life Would be on a Flat Earth and a Spinning Globe

With the ongoing debate about a spinning globe or a flat stationary earth, it’s difficult to experience one or the other because we have never lived on both.  If we had access to a flat stationary earth and a spinning globe earth, it would be very easy to see the difference between them.  But not being able to, we have to do all our experiments on paper because we can’t do them on both.  In fact we can’t even build a working model of a spinning globe so how can we begin to understand all the issues we could encounter living on one.  We can build a working model of a flat stationary earth though.  

The best we can do is relate to some things that could simulate that experience.   For example, we could imagine how things would work on a treadmill.  A treadmill acts much like a spinning globe, only much slower.  A treadmill only goes about 6 mph but the earth spins at 1000 mph.   If we could turn up the treadmill to the highest setting, we could get an idea of what it would be like to run in different directions on a moving surface.  It’s okay when we just stand still, but it’s when we begin to move in different directions that we would have to make huge adjustments in order not to fall over.  On a flat stationary earth this would not be an issue, we can move in any direction easily without having to think about it.

Monkeys would sure have a hard time jumping from tree to tree on a spinning globe as they would have to calculate each jump to make sure they jumped just right or the tree would either bang into them or they would miss it completely.   On a flat stationary earth they don’t have to make those calculations, the tree they are jumping for will always be there for them.  Maybe monkeys do make those calculations but we just don’t know it. 

It would be a totally different experience driving on a moving surface.  We are so used to the earth not moving beneath us that driving on a treadmill would take some getting used to.  Especially when we drove east and when we drove west.  And if we decide to go north or south, that would be very dangerous unless we got used to how to counteract the west east movement.  We are so used to driving on a surface that does not move.  Then again, what if we are actually driving on a spinning globe now, how would that change driving on a flat stationary earth?  Would anything change.  It has to, it’s one thing driving on a moving surface and another driving on a stationary one.

Jumping up and down on a spinning ball and a stationary earth would be very different as well.  On one the earth is moving while we are in the air and on the other it is not.  On one we are moving at 1000 mph when we are in the air, and on the other we are not, we come right back down to where we started.  By not being sure which one we are on now, it’s hard to imagine what effects the other one would produce.   It certainly couldn’t be the same.

Then I wonder what a calm day would be like on a stationary earth compared to a spinning globe.   On a spinning globe science says that everything is moving west to east at 1000 mph including the air and the clouds.  When we have a perfectly calm day with hardly any wind, and soft white billowy clouds in the sky, I wonder what the other earth would be like on a calm day?   I mostly wonder what it would be like to either be moving at 1000 mph or not to be moving at 1000 mph.   How would that change affect us?   We would certainly have to tell the difference, 1000 mph is faster than I can imagine travelling.  

And then there’s gravity.  Gravity isn’t a factor on a flat stationary earth, things simply fall down because they are heavier than what is below them.  On a spinning globe, it’s what holds us to the earth.  I wonder if we could actually feel gravity when we lifted our foot off the ground to take a step on the earth on which there is gravity.   I would like to feel that as I never have.  Maybe it’s like a magnet.  I’m glad it holds us on the earth though, I sure wouldn’t want to go flying off into space.

And then there is the thing of being up or down, sideways or up side down, that would be cool.   Imagine walking up side down on the earth and thinking you are walking right side up.  I wonder which one we are doing now.  And then again, on a spinning globe some people are doing both on different parts of the earth.  Funny thing, when I went to Australia, I didn’t notice any difference.  Maybe that’s how it’s supposed to work.   

If only we could live on both types of earth’s could we really find out what it is really like living in a place where everything is different.   I guess the astronauts that went to the moon must have had a taste of that.  It’s too bad we can’t go there anymore, those Van Allen radiation belts have gotten far too strong for man to be able to cross them anymore.
