Buddha’s Birthplace in Nepal Unharmed Despite Devastating Earthquake

On April 25, after the severe earthquake in Nepal, 12 of the world’s cultural heritage sites were almost completely destroyed. But when mainland reporters visited Nepal on April 27, they found Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha Shakyamuni, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, still intact.

After reporters entered Nepal, they went to Lumbini to see how bad the damage was from the earthquake.

However, they were extremely surprised that everything was normal!

Shops, restaurants, and gas stations were all open, and none of the world heritage buildings were damaged. Many foreign tourists, mainly from India, were there.

Manager Batalla, from the Lumbini Management Department, told reporters that after the earthquake, they inspected all the world cultural heritage buildings in town and found that, miraculously, none of them had been damaged.

Lumbini is located southwest of the junction of Nepal and India, about 90 miles from the earthquake epicenter. It is a rural area, and the villagers are farmers from the Tharu tribe. They are mostly optimistic by nature and easy going. Lumbini village is recognized a religious center, and it is exempt from taxation.

Although thousands of years of history were irreparably destroyed in minutes, it seems that some of the most sacred sites were protected and remain unharmed. Unfortunately, many of the other Heritage sites were completely destroyed, and it will not be possible to rebuild them.
