What it Means if Your Body Jerks While Falling Asleep

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Have you ever woken up with a sudden jolt just as you’ve started falling asleep? Or maybe it felt like you were falling? It could be that it felt like you were having a huge muscle spasm. You may have even felt a small shock sensation or a bouncing feeling.

This is called a hypnic jerk and it is an involuntary twitching of a muscle, or muscles. It is estimated that around 70% of people experience hypnic jerks at some point in their lives. They usually occur just as you are falling asleep, during what’s known scientifically as the hypnagogic state of consciousness.

Scientists believe that several factors can contribute to hypnic jerks happening: anxiety, stress, alcohol, caffeine, heavy exercise late in the evening, sleeping in an uncomfortable position, being very tired or fatigued. However, for some people, a hypnic jerk can actually be a symptom of a serious health condition. In fact, 10% of the population suffers from restless leg syndrome, which causes one to experience throbbing, painful sensations in their legs.

Hypnic jerks may be unsettling or annoying, and they can become cyclical if you start worrying about them, which is a very common thing with many sleeping difficulties. So now that you know, hopefully you can start to relax and not go to bed thinking about hypnic jerks. In addition, magnesium is an antidote to stress, the most powerful relaxation mineral available, and it can help improve your sleep.

Screw magnesium. A shot or two of Jack and a Xanex works just fine.

Don’t be a hypnic jerk. Take your magnesium. The supplements are too expensive though. I just get mine from road flares.

clucker is on a short hiatus.

        Someone had to fill in.

        Buddum bum.

Although no two persons are the same,I used to suffer from RLS and relized that it was caused by B12 deficiency, besides other side effects like depression, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness and so much more.

Magnesium is very important as well especially if you have a sweet tooth like me.

Side effects of XanAx include: skin rash, difficulty in micturition, ataxia, weight loss, dysarthria, memory impairment, cognitive dysfunction, drowsiness, fatigue, constipation, weight gain, insomnia, anxiety, diarrhea, blurred vision, decreased libido, increased appetite, and decreased appetite.,

So no,it does not work fine.

Calcium depletion causes this. I’ve only experienced it after prolonged exercise. Bicycle riding.

      Which uses up my calcium.

Anything that doctors can’t explain is called “stress.” How exactly is a reflex when falling asleep “stress.” It’s a non-explanation.

For the alternative view people out there, it has been said the jerk is cause when your astral body being reeled back into your physical body, by it’s silver cord. The jerk is when the astral body enters the physical body too quickly.
Then again, it could be a tumor.

I don’t know….but that falling feeling can sometimes be the real thing. I once broke a bed slat falling back into bed. Fell at least a couple feet and switched ends head to toe.
