Paris Fashion Week: Autumn/Winter 2018

The current event is highlighted by the graffiti-covered mountain at Balenciaga to Chanel’s avenue of fallen leaves.

A snow-covered mountain filled with neon graffiti took center stage at Balenciaga. The 1990s snowboarders and their layered clothings provided inspiration for AW18. The last part of the show had extreme bulky layered silhouettes. It showcased men’s and women’s wear that were in cohesion for the first time. An initiative with the World Food Programme (WFA) would see Balenciaga donate 10 percent of every WFP branded product for six months, starting August.

Pierpaolo Piccioli Valentino showcased the “Romanticism is strength” theme. The show opened with monochrome bold intarsia flowers wrapped around the body, as well as pops of opposite colors in the form of dresses that had elegant flowing lines that moved easily on the runway. Some were with scalloped edges and all were with layered over trousers. The decorative floral appliqué gave addition to the romantic touch with dramatic and minimal silhouettes.

For Christian Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri was on the road to feminist revolution. She was wrapped around from the 1960s protest art. It was the house’s first RTW line. Chiuri ran with this notion and created kilts with various lengths and unpredictable cloths. Her knitwear displayed heavy embroidery. There were also printed bags with embellished straps and patchwords to top the shopping list. (Watch video here.)

At Chloé, it was Natacha Ramsay-Levi’s second season. She had an opening with a forceful silhouette, a trench coat, a jodhpur jogger trousers and blazer, and chunky knit. It was worn with a pleated lace insert skirt. Also, there were V-neck shirt dresses worn with a pendant necklace, drop-waist dresses — some with knife-pleats and some others were embroidered. Moreover, there were hip dresses that expose the skin and Chloé logo socks.

At the Chanel show, Karl Lagerfeld revealed a nice stroll through an autumn avenue. The Grand Palais was covered with trees and fallen leaves, which were strewn on the catwalk. There were leaf print used throughout the collection of dresses, coats and jackets. Metallic accents were its key. The presenters wore flat gold boots with golden-flecked tights and bouclé tweed skirt suits. The finale was styled with a pink opera glove version of the designer’s signature fingerless gloves.
