In the wake of the deadly Christchurch shooting earlier this year, New Zealand attempted to crack down on their citizens’ gun rights with a mandatory gun buyback program that must have made Beto swoon.

There’s only one problem: it failed miserably!

The last we reported on it, 700 weapons had been turned over to the New Zealand government out of an estimated 1.5 million guns in the country overall.

Politicians are left scratching their heads and wondering why New Zealanders won’t comply with their authoritarian edicts. The so-called “gun reform” was expected to rid the vast New Zealand countryside of most semi-automatic firearms, magazines over a specified limit, and shotguns. New Zealand’s political chatelaine, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, had an almost unanimous parliamentary vote to institute the gun buy-back, though as Liberty Nation Legal Affairs Editor Scott Cosenza asserts, “Buy-back is really a misnomer because the government never owned those guns in the first place.” – SHTFPlan

Now, the government is planning on further restricting gun ownership by the end of the year, because it worked so well the last time, I guess?

The measures proposed to Parliament come as the country marks six months since deadly attacks at two mosques.

The prime minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, on Friday put a new bill before Parliament that would further restrict gun ownership, half a year after a mass shooting in Christchurch that was blamed partly on the country’s previously lax firearms laws.

The bill would create a register tracking all the guns in the country and oblige gun licenses to be renewed every five years instead of every 10. The legislation would also require doctors to report cases where gun owners have mental health issues that could make their possession of firearms a risk to themselves or others.

The government hopes Parliament will approve the measures by the end of the year.

They build on an initial set of reforms introduced in the immediate aftermath of the March 15 attacks by an Australian suspected white supremacist on worshipers at two mosques. Those reforms included a ban on assault weapons such as the AR-15-style rifles used in the shooting and a buyback scheme under which some 19,000 weapons and 70,000 parts have so far been collected.

While introducing the new bill, Ardern repeated her assertion in the difference in attitude toward gun ownership between her country and the United States, something that both anti-gun Americans and foreigners would do well to take note of.

She summed it up best when she said, “Owning a firearm is a privilege, not a right.”

You see, here in the US, owning a firearm is a right, but our Founding Fathers, as well as all Second Amendment advocates, believe that owning a firearm is a right whether or not the government tells us it is.

That’s kind of the whole point of arming a populace.

Right now, Beto is whining because people are telling him to “come and take it” after he declared on the debate stage that “hell yes we’ll take your AR-15s!”

In reality, the guns are what stand between the American people and tyranny, and if Beto wants to take our guns, he will have to take our bullets first. Does he really think he can stand up to millions of firearm owners who understand this? Much less win the presidency?
