A New Survey Tells Us More About American Cleaning Habits

Having a clean home significantly contributes to feeling happier and improving your mood and a recent survey from American Cleaning Institute done in March 2024 gives us more insights about our habits when it comes to home cleaning.

According to the survey, 62% of Americans strongly agreed that having a clean home helped them to feel their best, mentally and physically, while 72% of respondents stated that having a clean home gave them a sense of accomplishment. On top of that, 66% said, “it boosts my mood.”

Cleaning isn’t just important for your self-worth. Of all the 2024 participants who did a spring-cleaning, when asked if they were more attracted to their partner when they cleaned their home, 60% said they strongly agreed or somewhat agreed with that idea. And although only 6% of respondents confessed that they never spring-clean, the vast majority—a whopping 80%—confirmed they engaged in spring-cleaning at least once a year.

Even for people who like to tidy up, there are some downsides. Cleaning places that are hard to reach or access—for example, areas behind or underneath furniture or appliances—is the most dreaded task according to 49% of all people surveyed, followed by cleaning places that can get filthy—bathrooms, vents, basements—said 38% of respondents. Cleaning outside and washing or scrubbing surfaces followed with 31% and 20%, respectively.

Surprisingly, 80% of the people surveyed said they would rather clean their homes than fill out their tax forms. When asked why they hadn’t done a spring-cleaning, 42% of people said it felt overwhelming, or they would rather spend time doing other things. Around 16% said they don’t have enough time.

Time and effort are some main reasons why people avoid spring-cleaning, but robotic vacuum cleaners are available to make things easier. They save time, it takes little to no effort to supervise it, and you can control them through an app.

According to Statista, 14.2 million households in the U.S. had a robotic vacuum cleaner in 2018, and the global market value for these gadgets reached $4.5 billion in 2032, as reported by Global Market Insights.

North America is the second-largest regional market for robot vacuums, and the U.S. dominates with revenue of more than $850 million in 2023. As the convenience of these devices continues to appeal to more people, their adoption rate is expected to rise even further.

Maintaining a clean home is linked to improved mood and a sense of accomplishment.
