Popular Civil War Series Continues with New Book That Guides Readers through Opening Battle of Gettysburg Campaign

EL DORADO HILLS, CA: May 24, 2016 – Savas Beatie recently announced the release of a new book by authors Eric J. Wittenberg and Daniel T. Davis, Out Flew the Sabres: The Battle of Brandy Station, June 9, 1863—The Opening Engagement of the Gettysburg Campaign, the latest entry in their critically acclaimed Emerging Civil War Series.

Fleetwood Hill at Brandy Station was the site of four major cavalry battles during the course of the Civil War, but none was more important than the one fought on June 9, 1863. That clash turned out to be the opening engagement of the Gettysburg Campaign—and the one-day delay it engendered may very well have impacted the outcome of the entire campaign. The tale includes a veritable who’s-who of cavalry all-stars in the East: Jeb Stuart, Wade Hampton, John Buford, and George Armstrong Custer. Robert E. Lee, the great Confederate commander, saw his son, William H. F. Lee, being carried off the battlefield, severely wounded. Both sides suffered heavy losses, as the fight escalated into the largest cavalry battle ever fought on the North American continent.

Both authors were pleased with the end result of their research and writing. “Educating the public about the Battle of Brandy Station has long been a mission of mine, so anything that I can do to advance that cause, and to promote the preservation of that battlefield, made this project well worth the time and the effort,” said Wittenberg.

“As an individual with a deep interest in cavalry operations in the Eastern Theater, it was a tremendous experience to work on this effort,” said Davis. “Brandy Station is the best known of all Civil War cavalry battles and opens one of the most famous military campaigns in American history.”

About the Authors: Eric J. Wittenberg is an accomplished Civil War cavalry historian and author. An attorney in Ohio, Wittenberg has written more than two dozen articles and over a dozen books, including Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb Stuart’s Controversial Ride to Gettysburg (with J. David Petruzzi); The Battle of Brandy Station; and Gettysburg’s Forgotten Cavalry Actions, which won the prestigious 1998 Bachelder-Coddington Literary Award and the Army Historical Foundation’s Distinguished Writing Award, for Reprint, 2011 (second edition).

Daniel T. Davis is a graduate of Longwood University, with a B.A. in public history. Dan has worked as a historian at both Appomattox Court House National Historic Site and at the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. He resides in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with his wife, Katy, and their Beagle mix, Bayla.
