Review: Mental Health Recovery

Studies show that nearly 20% of all adults struggle with anxiety and depression. I am one of those. For the last 19 years, I have suffered from crippling depression and anxiety. Three years ago I started going to a mental health support group. The support group was based on a book titled, “Mental Health Recovery”. Reading this book and going to the support group has radically changed my life. While I still have depression and anxiety, it no longer controls my life. 

The thing I like most about the book is that it showed me that I have the power to overcome depression and anxiety. The book does not teach you how to cope with your condition but how to take control of your life and learn to live a full and happy life in spite of your mental health issues. Another thing I like about the book is that is based on three simple steps that when applied to your life enables you to overcome your mental health issues. I will admit it takes effort to apply these steps to your life, overcoming any mental health issue is not easy. The book is short and to the point, filled with things you can do to improve your mental health and challenge the negative thinking patterns caused by depression and anxiety.

I was first introduced to the book when I attended a presentation by the author called, “Introduction to Mental Health Recovery”. This presentation is where I was first introduced to the idea that I can take power over my mental health instead of being controlled by it.
