Interview with the Author of Cancer Simply Explained - Dr. Visar Vela

Dr. Visar Vela, a dedicated medical diagnostic assistant, discovered his passion for cancer research and diagnostics during his master’s thesis at the University of Bern, where he delved into blood cancer research in Adrian Ochsenbein’s lab. Throughout his Ph.D. in biological medicine, conducted at the Department of Pathology in Basel under the guidance of Stefan Dirnhofer and Alexandar Tzankov, he unraveled the mutational landscape of a rare lymphoma type. Through the pages of his book, Dr. Vela aims to provide readers with comprehensive insights into cancer development and diagnostics. Beyond his scientific pursuits, he finds joy in jogging, sailing, and cycling. Hailing from the picturesque Swiss Alps in Valais, Dr. Vela’s most creative moments often occur at airports, where he perceives them as fertile grounds for problem-solving, especially in the realm of cancer research.

Author Q&A

What inspired you to write your first book?

I had multiple influences to write this book. One was to understand the big picture of this disease since I did my Ph.D. on one particular cancer type (sequencing of marginal zone lymphoma) I had limited knowledge of cancer. Another reason was the death of my uncle unfortunately he died of colon cancer. However, the medical care in Northern Macedonia is pretty limited and I wanted to supply ( sensibilise) those people with more knowledge based on cancer care.

How did you come up with the title?

The title was changed many times, initially, it was cancer easily explained, then we decided to have it more professional with cancer simply explained. The title helps to understand what we will talk about. It is really for people who want to learn more about this disease easily.

What are your current projects?

Im doing my FAMH Training in Diagnostics including Microbiology and Hematology

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Yes I work in a diagnostic laboratory where we examine human samples, inform the doctors about the results and implement new technologies into diagnostic.

Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.

My two wonderful coauthors Laurence Favet and Günther Spahn.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

I did travel to Mexico and visited many libraries.

Which famous person, living or dead, would you like to meet and why?

Muhamed Ali because he shook up the world and inspired so many people.
