BookBuzz.net Interviews Author Gyanendra Rana About His New Book - A Monkey Became a Monk

In a recent interview with BookBuzz, author Gyanendra Rana shared insights into his life, influences, and the deeply personal journey that inspired his book A Monkey Became a Monk: A Journey from Grief to Purpose Through the Understanding of the Mind.

Rana has spent more than 25 years working as a supply chain transformation leader in the technology industry, but his lifelong passion has centered on understanding the human mind. Through practices such as yoga, meditation, and the teachings of Vedantic philosophy, he has explored how individuals can move from emotional turmoil toward clarity and purpose. His book follows the story of Anurag, a character whose journey closely reflects Rana’s own path from grief and confusion toward deeper self-awareness and inner peace.

Rana credits a number of thinkers and authors with shaping his perspective. Writers such as Paulo Coelho and Jay Shetty influenced his ability to communicate meaningful philosophical ideas through accessible storytelling, while Joseph Campbell’s concept of the hero’s journey helped shape the narrative structure of transformation in his work. He also draws strong inspiration from spiritual teachings, particularly those of Swami Vivekananda and the Bhagavad Gita, which continue to guide his understanding of the mind and human purpose.

One piece of advice that has deeply influenced Rana’s life comes from the Bhagavad Gita: focus on your actions rather than the results. He believes that when individuals direct their attention toward effort, intention, and discipline, outcomes often unfold naturally. This principle forms a central theme in A Monkey Became a Monk, where the protagonist’s growth reflects the power of clarity, focus, and purposeful action.

Rana’s inspiration for writing the book came during a profoundly difficult period following the loss of both his brother and father. Those experiences led him to question life, suffering, and the nature of attachment. Through the teachings of Vedantic philosophy and the guidance of Guru Krishna, he began to find new ways of understanding grief and healing. Writing the book became a way to process that journey and share insights that might help others navigate similar challenges.

Originally raised in a humble environment marked by poverty and limited resources, Rana’s life journey has taken him across the world. He has lived and worked in countries such as Korea, the United Kingdom, and Ireland before eventually settling in the United States. These diverse experiences have shaped both his professional career and his philosophical outlook.

Currently, Rana continues to explore ideas about how knowledge influences the human mind, reading works such as The Beginning of Infinity by David Deutsch and Virus of the Mind by Richard Brodie. Looking ahead, he plans to continue writing about the evolution of the mind through a new series titled Knowledge to Wisdom (K2W). The series will explore how ancient teachings, including metaphors from the Bhagavad Gita, can be applied to modern life, helping readers translate philosophical understanding into practical decisions, relationships, and personal purpose.

Through his writing, Rana hopes to encourage readers to look inward, understand their minds more deeply, and ultimately live with greater clarity, balance, and meaning..
