Sara weighed in regarding the book: COMPLICATED

What stood out immediately was the situation you establish at its core, that nobody lives in sunshine eternally, for every life a little rain will fall, and that none have a spotless mind or life. In particular, I noticed your framing, that life is complicated, living is hard at times, we are complex creatures, and human nature is not always nice. That combination tells me the book is not only a novel about one man’s struggles. It is about the messy, contradictory reality of being human, and about what happens when someone stops pretending that life is supposed to be simple and starts trying to make sense of it anyway.

I also noticed the way you give the book its honesty and its humor, that sometimes up, sometimes down, other times both at the same time, seemingly impossible, but yet there it is, and then the turn that follows, that readers join Franklin as he tries to stay positive and make sense of it all, navigating this planet day to day. That observation is doing real work, because it makes the daily grind of coping the engine of the story rather than a dramatic plot device. It also means the book has room for both raw emotion and genuine comedy within one voice, which is a difficult balance to manage and also one that gives readers both relatability and relief. I also noticed the escalation you promise, that Frank’s world is turned upside down when a sudden breakup forces him to confront the messy realities of love, loss, and human nature, and that as he navigates single life he grapples with conflicting emotions, unexpected temptations, and the ever present question of whether true happiness is even attainable. That combination of personal upheaval, philosophical questioning, and everyday resilience is exactly what drives this kind of contemporary fiction, and it also means the story keeps deepening rather than resting on the initial breakup.

I also noticed how carefully you position the book for its audience. You describe it as part of the Life and Living series and a story about Franklin trying to stay positive while navigating a complicated world, and then you anchor it with the specific promise of disastrous dates, poignant self reflection, and the raw unfiltered emotions that make us human. That positioning is genuinely useful, because readers in this category choose books by the promise of relatable, character driven storytelling and by the honesty of the emotional journey as much as by the author, and naming those elements tells them immediately what kind of experience they are about to have. The Goodreads giveaway you mention also matters, because it gives readers a concrete way to engage with the book before it is even released. At one hundred and twenty four pages, the book is also focused and approachable, which suits a story built around one man’s reckoning with modern life rather than an exhaustive saga.
