Usually, after few months of usage, a Mac loses its good old speed and becomes a bit sluggish. While saving the file, the Mac OS searches for the first single chunk of memory that is either equal or greater than the size of that file.

Similarly, when you delete a file, the OS frees the memory chunk allocated to that file. The process of deletion creates a free space in between occupied memory chunks. With such several instances of file creation and deletion, the space in the hard drive gets completely scattered.

Once the free space in the hard drive gets scattered, it becomes hard for the operating system to allocate the required size of memory chunk to new files. This results in the breaking up of new files into multiple logical fragments before the saving operations. When you try to perform any operation on such fragmented files, the OS takes more time to locate all their fragments and load them into the memory before it can perform the action. This indeed makes your Mac look slower.

Unfortunately, there is no Mac option that can defrag the fragmented drives and you need to take the help of any third party hdd defragmentation software to do the job. These software provide distinguished options to defrag your entire hard drive, selected volume or only the fragmented files in the hard disk. Moreover, with simple and interactive graphical user interfaces, the software are pretty easy to use even for the users, who do not have much technical knowledge.
