Recording artist William Pilgrim recently stopped by the unique all-vinyl record shop/concert loft – Origami Vinyl – to perform a special acoustic set from his critically acclaimed debut record, The Great Recession. The performance also celebrated the album’s vinyl release, which Origami Vinyl, located in the bohemian community of Echo Park, CA, is pleased to carry. William Pilgrim will be announcing more live gigs very soon.

Vinyl records are making a rapid comeback. It’s not just the “vintage” sound that is luring music lovers to vinyl records. Contemporary artists are now pumping out music on vinyl. In 2011, record purchases were at a two-decade high, with unit sales at 3.9 million, a 36 percent jump over 2010, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Though still a fraction of overall sales of CDs and MP3, vinyl sales have grown annually since 2005. People are reacting to the tactile experience of the hunt, walking into a store, plucking through stacks, absorbing the cover art, going home and listening to it, really feeling the music. Vinyl offers a personal experience, similar to buying books at a brick and mortar bookstore.

The energy was palpable as they offered several more selections from The Great Recession along with a Buddy Miller cover. At one point Pilgrim told the audience that when he used to be homeless he would spend his nights on streets just adjacent to Origami Vinyl’s storefront.

“We took a very organic approach to recording this record,” says Pilgrim. “It was therefore a natural move to also release The Great Recession on vinyl and do a show at one of L.A.’s leading independent vinyl record stores. The intimacy of these performances is great and I look forward to the opportunity to do more of them.”
