Trước đó, Microsoft Office Mobile chỉ có mặt trên máy tính bảng Surface của hãng này nhằm thu hút người dùng, tuy nhiên sự thất bại thảm hại của Surface đã khiến Microsoft phải thay đổi chiến thuật. Đầu tiên là cung cấp Microsoft Office Mobile cho iPhone, photowonder rồi bây giờ là iPad, nhờ đó Microsoft Office Mobile hứa hẹn sẽ được nhiều người dùng quan tâm hơn.
Theo Microsoft, Microsoft Office Mobile là một phiên bản hoàn toàn mới chứ không phải lấy lại từ Microsoft Office dành cho Windows. Để sử dụng hiệu quả Microsoft Office Mobile, người dùng có thể sẽ được yêu cầu mua một tài khoản Office 365 với giá 9,99 USD (Home Premium) hay 6,99 USD (Personal).
Hiện Microsoft Office Mobile đang được cung cấp miễn phí trên App Store cho người dùng tải về và cài đặt (dung lượng: 49,2MB).
