Energy efficiency in manufacturing can develop global competitiveness

Patna, Jan 29 (KNN)  To sensitize MSMEs to upgrade their manufacturing process towards usage of energy efficient technologies so as to reduce the cost of production and emission of greenhouse gases, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (MSME-DI), has organized a one day programme here.

‘The Energy Efficient Programme’ held on January-23 is one of the components of the scheme of National Manufacturing Competitiveness Programme (NMCP).

More than 50 MSMEs and faculty from nationally reputed organisations / institutions such as IIT, Patna PCRA, RBI-Patna participated in the programme, the MSME Ministry’s social media site said.

Cost of energy is an important component of the cost structure of any manufacturing unit. With the spiralling cost and uncertain supply, energy has already become a critical input in any modern manufacturing process and for cost competitiveness.

MSMEs need to focus on economising on energy use, considering that the small and medium enterprises have so far no compulsion to conserve energy and use energy in an efficient manner.

As per the Scheme Technology and Quality Upgradation Support to MSMEs (TEQUP), the Office of the Development Commissioner, MSME undertakes capacity building of MSME Clusters for energy efficiency/clean development interventions and other technologies mandated as per the global standards.  It also helps in the implementation of Energy Efficient technologies (EET) in MSME sector/units; and setting up of Carbon Credit Aggregation Centres (CCA) for introducing and popularising clean development mechanism(CDM) in MSME clusters.

NMCP is the nodal programme of the Government of India to develop global competitiveness among Indian MSMEs. As a result of the globalization and liberalization of the economy, the units in the MSME sector have been facing new and bigger challenges not only from MNCs but also from bigger domestic players. 

Recognising the dynamics of the new environment, particularly in the context of the manufacturing domain, the NMCP has been supporting MSMEs through its various programmes / components.(KNN/ES)
