The Easy Way to Start an Office Cleaning Business

I’ll be honest here, there are lots (I mean lots) of people with great business ideas who never get their businesses off the ground. Why? They never even get started.

2 big reasons why these would-be-entrepreneurs never see their potential profits are:

1. They can’t give up the income from their current day job, and
2. They need a guaranteed income to support a family or their existing lifestyle.

I get it. I’ve been there. I don’t try to talk people into starting their own companies unless it’s something they really want. There’s no question, launching a start-up is a big project, and you’ve got to “enjoy the adventure”, or it’s simply not worth it.

That said, what if there was a way to start your own company part-time without giving up the income you get from your current job?

And what if the business that you started was just as stable (or even more so) that your current place of employment? We all know that even a job is not a guaranteed source of income – these can disappear at any time.

Why Start a Commercial Cleaning Business?

I’ve long admired the field of commercial cleaning because it provides the opportunity for virtually anyone to get in on the dream of owning his or her own business. You don’t need an advanced education or degree, difficult-to-acquire skills or lots of cash to get started.

Yet, cleaning services are always needed – they never disappear. This is a long-lasting business that never goes out of style no matter how much technology advances.

Although I’ve never worked in the janitorial services industry, I have worked in landscaping maintenance and the same rule applies:

“Large corporations, business parks and office buildings need these services month after month, creating an ongoing source of income for those who are willing to provide these services.”

How Much Money Can Office Cleaners Make?

Sam Rodman started his office cleaning business with a borrowed vacuum cleaner. He says that office cleaning is so recession-proof because large, affluent companies NEED the service month after month. He was able to generate over $4,000 per month within his first year of getting started – and that’s working part-time.

Of course, most people don’t want to spend their lives being janitors, even if it is a part-time gig. That’s why many of these entrepreneurs end up expanding their services and hiring employees to do the work for them.

Then they simply manage the operations, which can include billing, marketing, administrative tasks, customer relations, etc.. (that’s if they don’t hire people to handle those jobs as well).

This is quite an interesting field, due to the fact that not only can a person easily start from scratch part-time, but the potential for make a large amount of income is definitely there. Even smaller operations can earn over $500,000 per year. This is not a small income business for sure.

The Problem with Starting an Office Cleaning Business:

The big question is, “How do I compete with big cleaning companies?”.

The answer is quite simple, yet most would-be entrepreneurs never get beyond this point. Smaller service providers are more agile and flexible and can therefore offer custom services that the big guys just can’t provide. They can also beat them with lower rates.

Think outside the box here. There is more to cleaning offices than vacuuming, mopping and taking out the trash. According to Brenna Pearce of the Become a Cleaning Business Owner guide, companies can offer:

• Washing windows and exterior walls
• Move-in cleaning services
• Renovation clean-up
• Parking lot maintenance and more…

Getting Started Cleaning Offices:

The best way to get started is through the connections that you already have in the community. However, instead of asking your friends to hire you, ask local business owners for referrals.

Here’s an example: Your local dry cleaner or salon may not need cleaning services, but they have a direct relationship with the owner of the strip mall or business complex in which they are located. Using these key relationships is an easy way to get your foot in the door without having to make cold calls or place expensive ads.
