But how can you be sure your blog is attracting (and retaining) readers? Even though quality content is vital, it doesn’t matter how great your blog posts are if no one is reading them. Fortunately, there are some tried and true tips out there. Read on to learn some of today’s best practices that you can put to work on your own blog.

Get Visual

The layout and design of your blog is one of the most important elements. Blogs that are busy, unorganized and ugly are not a place readers want to stay for very long. Because you only have a few seconds to catch a reader’s eye before they click away from your blog, it’s important to keep it clean, crisp and consistent. To do this, make good use of white space, which gives the elements some space to breathe. Likewise, be sure you use enough space between your lines so as not to cause eye fatigue.

A good example of a blog that follows this best practice is the Amway Connections blog. It offers readers a clean feel along with appropriate visuals and context that aren’t jammed against each other. The content naturally guides the reader’s eye and there is substantial use of white space.

Have a Call to Action

The layout of your blog should encompass a design that leads to your call to action (CTA), whether that’s driving readers to your website, influencing them to make a purchase or asking them to leave a comment. Include a standout headline that links to your CTA and put this headline in multiple places where people are most likely to see it, such as the sidebar and end of a post.

Also be sure not to distract from your CTA. For example, links in your posts should open in a new tab or webpage, so you don’t run the risk of the reader permanently clicking away from your blog.

Choose Your Colors

Different colors evoke different feelings and influence emotion, so do your homework before choosing a color palette for your blog. For example, purple tends to strike up creativity. In addition to color, you need to think about what font you want to use. Do not use more than two or three different fonts or else you run the risk of your blog looking messy. Content is the final key component of your blog. When it comes to creating blog posts, think quality over quantity. To get people to read your posts, you need to have creative, catchy titles. While you want to pique readers’ interest, don’t give away the whole plot so your readers will want to read on.

Blog posts should be brief, as well. Aim for posts that are no longer than 600 words, so you don’t lose your readers’ attention. Subheads are also important in longer blog posts because they break up chunks of content and make for easier reading.
