Facebook Updates News Feed to Cut Back on Links to Low-Quality Webpages
Facebook is cracking down on “misleading” and “spammy” posts in its latest update to its News Feed.
The social networking firm, in a blog post, says it has adjusted its News Feed algorithms so Facebook users will see fewer posts and ads that link to low-quality webpages.
“Similar to the work we’re already doing to stop misinformation, this update will help reduce the economic incentives of financially-motivated spammers,” the blog post reads. “We have had a policy in place since last year to prevent advertisers with low-quality web page experiences from advertising on our platform. Now, we are increasing enforcement on ads and also taking into account organic posts in News Feed.”
As part of the update, Facebook has examined “hundreds of thousands” of webpages linked to from Facebook to detect those with low-quality content and a significant number of disturbing or malicious ads.
The social network then uses artificial intelligence to determine if new webpages shared on its site have similar characteristics.
“So if we determine a post might link to these types of low-quality webpages, it may show up lower in people’s feeds and may not be eligible to be an ad,” the post adds. “This way people can see fewer misleading posts and more informative posts.”
The changes are being implemented gradually in the coming months. Facebook is warning publishers with low-quality landing pages to expect a decline in traffic.
