Both Drupal and WordPress are widely used content management systems and it can be hard to differentiate between the two offerings as it can depend on your goals and needs as to which one is best suited.

The most obvious starting point would be to look at what it costs for either CMS and on the face of it, WordPress wins the day because its platform is free.

It is not totally free to go with WordPress as your website solution as certain customization options come at a cost. In comparison, Drupal is more expensive when it comes to startup costs.

It is also worth noting that developers tend to charge less to work on a WordPress site than Drupal as it is less complex and more user-friendly.

Keeping it simple

One of the fundamental selling points of WordPress is that it is a system that even a novice can work with but still has enough complex features to satisfy more technically accomplished users.

By comparison, Drupal is not as intuitive and you will need to have some development knowledge to be able to create a fully functioning website with ease using this CMS.

If you want a simple but effective option WordPress wins that particular argument.

Security issues

You want your website design to incorporate certain security features so that you have reduced vulnerability from hackers targeting your site.

On the face of it, you could argue that Drupal is more robust when it comes to security but it can be argued that the reason why some WordPress is vulnerable is down to 3rd party plugins that have been uploaded.

In other words, it is not WordPress itself that is more vulnerable to security issues compare to Drupal but users introducing aspects of vulnerability. Any website can be successfully targeted by hackers if the right security measures are not in place and although Drupal might have more security features WordPress can also offer protection when setting up with security in mind.

Straight out of the box

If you are looking for a CMS that is quick and easy to install and want a basic platform to get you started before pursuing customization options, WordPress ticks the right boxes.

WordPress also offers a quick set up if you are building a website that is fairly simple in its design and Drupal will often prove more complex and take longer to develop.

In summary, Drupal enjoys a tiny market share compared to WordPress and that’s after you consider it has been around for longer than its rival, but its not a popularity contest. However, it does suggest that WordPress has got it right when you compare all the key points and features for both products, which is probably why about a third of all websites rely on WordPress as their CMS.
