How Should You Maintain the Hygiene in Your Office Premises?
People talk about maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in the office premises. They know mostly everything needs to be cleaned, but the real question is ‘How’. Did you know about 58% of people between the age of 18-35 have taken more than 5 days of sick leaves for preventable illness in last year?
Also, did you know about 40 percent had to go to work even while they were unwell because they had already consumed their sick leaves?
Now how is this preventable? Hygiene my dear friend! Read through this to know more about how hygiene should be maintained in your office premises as suggested in the below words.
Introduction:
Don’t you keep your house clean regularly? You even avoid using public transport at times while commuting to work considering the hygiene factors, but what about your office? People from everywhere are going to be at the same place at the same time with no assurance of what risk we might be exposing ourselves to. Offices have closed premises; they are not very well ventilated, which basically means that we are always prone to face health issues given the overall setup, design and structure.
1. Your Desk
Yes, your lovely desk that you decorated with so many pictures, sticky notes, certificates (for your motivation), your coffee mug which you use to sip your 1st cup of coffee to begin your day at work, and many other things.
Did you know keyboards can collect 70% more bacteria than a toilet seat?
• If using a shared workstation, using a sanitizer spray to just disinfect is a great idea.
• Always ensure to clean your desk and all equipment on it at least twice in a day. Even if that calls for asking a house-keeping staff to get your desk cleaned.
You could stop a lot of infections from spreading if you do not allow dust to gather on your desk. Keep a tissue box on your desk to wipe your face and avoid to use the same tissue paper the second time Dispose it!
2. Sanitize / Wash Your Hands Regularly
Avoid handshakes as much as possible and avoid touching dirty surfaces. Even if you do that, please ensure that you are washing your hands regularly using a soap or a hand wash and water. If it’s not possible to wash it regularly then be sure to at least sanitize your hands regularly. Even WHO recommends to use sanitizers with greater than 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol as active ingredients in its composition.
3. Toilet and Toiletries
Check that your office toilets are cleaned regularly and toiletries are available for all staff members. It should be communicated to all employees that a certain level of hygiene is expected from them. “Leave the washroom in a condition you would want others to leave it for you”. Notes like ‘If you sprinkle, when you tinkle, be Neat and wipe the seat’, sounds funny! But has a deep meaning to it specially when it comes to your health.
Saying, that leaving the washroom or toilet the way you would like to see it when using is simply your responsibility.
Make sure you clean your hands properly after using the washroom and avoid using public washrooms as much as possible. In situations, where you cannot avoid using a public washroom, at least wipe the seat before using it or may be use a sanitizer spray followed by washing your hands thoroughly. Remember! Close the tap forsure, you don’t want to waste water at the same time.
4. Your Mugs, Cups, Plates, etc.
Ensure that you clean the utensils used by you regularly. Avoid sharing mugs or cups as much as possible. However, if there is no other option than sharing these, ensure you wash it properly before using it.
Using bio degradable disposable utensils is probably another option, while that could just be another cost to company and hence your mug, cup, plate, no one but you are accountable for these to be clean. Simple!
5. Coming Back From Work
Avoid making any physical contact with any family member when you return from work. It might be tough to stop little kids to come running towards you, but ‘DO NOT’ risk your loved one’s life. Head to the washroom straight, take off your clothes, dip them in a bucket of water or a washing machine to wash them followed by a proper bath to then only meet your family members.
See, you are responsible for you own health and at the same time, you are also in charge of keeping hygiene standards maintained for the safety of your loved ones.
Conclusion:
To be safe and healthy, we have to follow as many safety measures as we can, not just for ourselves but also for our families, friends, relatives, and colleagues too. There are times when we just want to be lazy and do not feel like following all the rules; however, there is no alternative to apart from keeping your health as your priority. No matter whether you are in your office, home, visting someone, your safety is your liability and your health is ultimately your wealth.
Remember the economy is opening because of the worst recession ever not because it’s safe out there. By all means, we are definitely not trying to scare you; all we are saying is “STAY SAFE AND STAY HEALTHY”
