COVID-19 Impact on the Cloud Storage Usage (and Where it's Headed)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Coronavirus changed the world like few things have in modern history. Because of coronavirus, IT enterprises and other businesses have needed to adapt to having employees work from home. This has meant that businesses have needed to get accustomed to using mobility tools and services. Many businesses have had to migrate to the cloud for data storage, communications, and collaboration.

As a result, cloud spending saw a 37% increase during the first quarter of 2020. It reached a whopping $29 billion. There is no reason to think this trend is going to change. Workers are exiting the traditional work environment and are working virtually. Businesses urgently need the flexibility, reliability, security, and cost-effectiveness offered by cloud services.

There’s no question that the COVID-19 pandemic is going to negatively impact the economy. We have already seen signs of this. However, cloud storage spending is estimated to rise 19 percent for 2020. However, IT spending as a whole, according to Gartner, will experience an eight percent fall.

COVID-19 Accelerates an Existing Trend

Prior to the pandemic, organizations were looking to migrate to the cloud for their computer storage and networking capabilities. Many businesses were attracted to the cloud offerings since they are pay-as-you-go. This means that organizations can be extremely flexible. They can quickly expand their cloud storage needs if their organization’s needs increase and then return to previous usage if the need decreases.

Something that the coronavirus pandemic reinforced is that modern businesses need to be agile and flexible. Organizations that were already transitioning to the cloud prior to the pandemic found it easier to provide consistent products and services to their customers as opposed to those who were scrambling to play catch up.

Why Businesses Are Turning to Cloud Computing

For businesses of all sizes, the benefits derived from cloud computing are almost endless – from cloud storage options to computing power. Businesses save time and money. Cloud computing improves productivity, drives innovation, and improves collaboration.

Businesses can access the information they need anywhere on the globe as long as they have a compatible device and a network to connect to. As opposed to storing information on a computer or server, cloud computing keeps information on the Internet. Since information is stored in a central hub, anyone who has the right access can get a hold of the information they need when they need it.

Another benefit of cloud computing is that it syncs data for all devices that are connected to the cloud. This means that everyone who needs to have access to information will always have information that is updated in real time.

Cloud computing allows users to access any file and use many applications in the same way they would use them if they were in an office. Collaboration is improved because cloud computing allows two people on opposite sides of the globe to work on the same project, give the same presentation, and have access to the same information.

Business owners appreciate cloud computing because even when they are away from their office or their local server in their office is inaccessible, data in the cloud is always available to be accessed and updated as needed.

How Cloud Computing Has Made it Easier for Businesses to Respond to COVID-19

The increased demand for cloud computing because of the COVID-19 pandemic shows how crucial of a role it has played in helping organizations, be them private businesses or governments, to respond quickly in the wake of COVID-19. It has offered a flexible network of shareable virtual and physical resources. Organizations have benefited from the self-service provisioning and on-demand admin features.

One key area where cloud computing has shown its value during COVID-19 is with remote education. Several platforms are being used that allow students, ranging from elementary school students to those who are in a university, to continue to get the education that they need while the pandemic is in full swing. A good example of that are companies like BrainStation that offer online learning programs where you can get a diploma in different fields that allow you to work remotely afterward and secure your income.

Cloud computing allows businesses to quickly make the changes needed to stay viable. Now, the tech business sector is reacting by creating more solutions that help organizations and governments face what remains of the COVID-19 pandemic and be prepared for the next global situation that could limit traditional communication.

Adjusting Regulations for Cloud Computing

Businesses and governments are looking into the best ways to adjust their policies to enable and increase cloud computing use. The pandemic has highlighted cloud computing’s ability to improve the lives of people. It has shown itself to be the right tool to keep societies and economies running during COVID-19 and during any future pandemic or worldwide emergency that could arise.

Around the world, policymakers and regulators are trying to find ways to future proof the cloud computing infrastructure. A future proof infrastructure will be flexible, easy to deploy, and adapt to whatever cloud solutions are needed at the time.

Security and privacy are front and center during these discussions. Regulators and policymakers have already seen the dangers that making rapid shifts to cloud computing without pre-established protocols in place can create. In the early aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, while businesses were frantically trying to get their employees set up to work from home and while they were frantically trying to use cloud computing to organize business with customers and vendors, there were several attempts by various individuals to hack systems and gain access to sensitive information.

Thankfully, the majority of these attacks were thwarted. But some were successful. Both the thwarted attacks and the successful attacks highlighted the need for improved security and protocols for storing, accessing, and transmitting information in the cloud.

There has also been an increased demand for connectivity infrastructure. To that end, many organizations are working on expanding Wi-Fi coverage to areas that currently do not have it. The idea is to make it easier for people to access the information they need from the cloud, such as educational services.

While many negative things have come out of the COVID-19 crisis, one positive thing has been an increased willingness by many to work together. Cloud computing and the flexibility that it provides is making this collaboration easier and is improving the lives of people.
