The Firefighting Profession – What Mark Sallada Has to Say
Mark Sallada was the Fire Police Captain for the Bellegrove Fire Company, which he joined as a fire police lieutenant, and he still continues to serve as a volunteer with the fire company. Sallada went on to start his own company by the name of Sallada Services, which was rebranded later as 911 Rapid Response.
He also works as a part-time K9 officer and is also the owner of Sallada Search & Rescue. His endeavors in the field are well-renowned, and he is not only an experienced entrepreneur, but also a dedicated fireman. However, his journey into the world of business began with firefighting, and today, we sit down with him to discuss just what a fireman actually does.
Certainly everyone knows or thinks they know what a firefighter does: put out a fire. However, that is only one of the many tasks that a firefighter can perform in their daily service to a city or province. The different jobs that a firefighter can perform throughout his career are so varied that not all can be defined.
Generally speaking, a firefighter is a professional from the firefighting and rescue service of the city or province in which he works, and this includes any type of accident that occurs that endangers lives or property. In practice, this includes all types of emergencies of greater or lesser degree, which require the means and techniques of the firefighters for their resolution.
The most important emergencies that are attended to are the best known to all, these are:
1. Extinguishing urban fires
It encompasses any type of fire that arises in urban areas. Fires in flats, establishments, garages, cars, etc. in population centers are included in this category.
2. Extinguishing rural fires
In this case, it refers to fires that arise in houses or dwellings away from urban centers, town houses, haystacks, stables, etc.
3. Extinguishing forest fires
We all know this type of fire, in which the fire spreads through the forest vegetation, and can also affect rural homes that are in its path.
4. Industrial fire extinguishing
This includes all fires unleashed in factories, warehouses, transformation centers, in short, any establishment whose activity is industrial. These fires are characterized by the large amount of combustible products (storage of wood, charcoal, gas bottles, etc.).
5. Release in traffic accidents
Another of the tasks commonly performed by firefighters is the release of victims trapped in traffic accidents. Here we can also include any other type of claim in means of transport such as buses, trains, etc.
6. Vertical rescues
From the evacuation of people trapped in a fire, to the rescue of victims fallen down slopes, wells, etc.
7. Water rescues
From people who have fallen with their vehicle into a river or reservoir, to the search and rescue of victims on the coast, emergencies can be included in this group.
8. Dangerous goods emergencies
Any type of incident that may arise in the transport or handling of materials declared dangerous (flammable, explosive, toxic, corrosive, radioactive, etc.), must also be resolved by the firefighters. Here we can include from an accident of a truck that transports a dangerous product to the leakage of a dangerous substance in an industrial process.
9. Removal of dangerous items
One more work carried out by the firefighters is the removal of any element that threatens the safety of people or nearby property. Here we can include trees fallen by the wind, roofs or other construction elements affected by wind storms, etc.
10. Landslides and search for buried people
In this group we can include any building or construction that threatens to collapse or that has suffered a partial collapse, and that must be cleaned up and propped up to distribute the loads and avoid the total collapse of the structure. As well as the search for victims who could have been trapped after a collapse.
Broadly speaking, these could be the serious emergencies that firefighters deal with at work. Although it should also be noted that what are called minor emergencies can happen on a day-to-day basis, which although they do not usually involve seriousness, they must also be mentioned, since they occur daily. A summary of these could be:
- Minor fires (containers, etc).
- Home openings
- Technical assistance
- Animal rescue
- Swarm withdrawal
- Fire prevention and awareness work
11. Fire, accidents and rescues
These are the main actions that a firefighter is used to performing as a public service, providentially and guaranteeing safety in different situations of daily life.
