Managing Cyberattacks: This Is How Online Stores Are Dealing With Cybercrimes

Online shopping has gained popularity over the last years. Today, you can easily order appliances, food, clothes, and anything else right from the comfort of your couch. However, ordering means that you have to fill in some of your personal details to get what you want. Although this type of shopping has brought convenience, it is also putting consumers at risk of cyberattacks. These criminals are looking for loopholes to hack into systems, steal consumers’ data and use it for malicious intentions. online retailers have the responsibility of reminding their customers to secure their details to stay safe from the cyberattacks. The following are ways the stores are helping customers protect their online identity.

No matter the type of online business going on, it is crucial to ensure consumers are secure online. It is the role of the retailer to keep their site safe from the attackers and ensure their clients are not exposed to criminals. The retailer needs to comply with the rules of operating an online business. They can shop for various extensions that help them extend their security all over their site and beyond.

A data breach will not only affect the customers but the business too. Therefore, online retailers should advise their customers to:

  • Use multi-factor authentication in their accounts and emails to provide extra layers of security. This means that only the registered device can access the account or email address.
  • Use the latest and updated software and apps when login into the site. This is to ensure the software doesn’t provide any loopholes for cybercriminals.
  • Use VPN to hide their IP address when using public Wi-Fi. This ensures hackers cannot intercept the network and access sensitive data.
  • Back up their data on an external hard drive to ensure that they can access it in case the data in their device is stolen, gets a virus, or is held for ransom.

Things Online Shoppers Should Watch Out For

Online shoppers also have the duty of protecting themselves from cybercriminals. They should watch out for:

Hackers

These are people who use codes to hack into devices by breaking into the network. If a shopper has outdated software, there may be patches that can provide ways for the hacker to get access to their sensitive details. This is why it is advisable to keep the software updated. When shopping online, the hacker hacks the site and steals details like name, address, credit card numbers, and contact details. They can then steal the consumer’s identity or use it to get to their bank.

Ransomware

In this type of attack, the hacker encrypts the consumer’s data and asks for payment to decrypt the data. The hackers use different tricks to get shoppers to open their links and once that is done, the hacker locks the screen or encrypts the data. The restriction can only be removed once the shopper pays the ransom.

Phishing

This is one of the most common types of attacks that criminals are using today. It is easy to execute and easy to get online users to do what they are asked. When phishing, the attacker creates a site that resembles the site that the shopper uses. They then entice them to enter their details and once this is done, the attack occurs.

Conclusion

Both the retailers and online shoppers have the major role of protecting themselves from cybercrimes. It is the duty of the online shop to ensure they apply cybersecurity measures to protect both their business and the shopper.
