How To Become An Energy Efficient Business

In the journey to become an energy efficient business you will come across lots of terminology, this article from NES Fircroft will help to clear things up. Read on for energy efficiency tips.

1. Invest In Your Windows And Doors

During the summer, it’s possible your employees may want to open your windows and let in some breeze, but every open window is costing you money. Your central air conditioning will need to run extra in order to cool down your office. Windows, whether open or closed, do retain heat during the summer, so the simple act of investing in awnings, window tinting or shades can help lower costs.

Your office may also have trouble regulating indoor temperatures if your doors aren’t properly sealed. If the caulking or weather-stripping is worn away, it could contribute to air leakage. Update your door’s accessories accordingly, and you will find your company saving on energy costs.

2. Consider Going Solar

With the price of traditional electricity constantly on the rise, many business owners are considering the advantages of going solar. Depending on how much capital you can invest, going partially solar for your business can mean less dependence on the grid. Of course, the upfront costs should always bear careful consideration, especially if you have a large business to run.

Your business can and will benefit from employing solar energy. By installing a solar grid system, you are essentially pre-paying 40 years of electricity usage. What’s more, many quality systems offer at least 25 years worth of warranty on their solar grids.

The use of solar energy is also a great marketing tactic for your business to employ. When coming up with your advertising campaigns, mentioning the steps that you take to lower carbon emissions for your business and that you employ the use of clean energy will resonate with many potential consumers. On a similar note, also consider ways your business can use solar energy during daytime working hours.

Something as simple as re-positioning work desks or opening blinds can help you curb your company’s energy consumption. Letting in natural light whenever possible lessens your dependence on electricity.

3. Choose Energy-Efficient Machinery

When it comes to running a more efficient office, consider the equipment or machinery you use regularly. Opting for a fax machine, printer or scanner that bears the familiar Energy Star logo means you can cut your energy consumption costs in half. These machines owe their efficiency to powering down when not in use and not wasting energy.

Old air conditioning units and heaters are also culprits when it comes to rising energy costs. Though replacing HVAC systems isn’t cheap, it can lower your energy costs later on if you choose a more efficient system.

4. Use Programmable Thermostats

An air conditioning unit is extremely valuable in the workplace during the summer heat wave, but it can also become expensive to run. Choose to install programmable thermostats and you instantly have climate control in your hands. This way, you aren’t unnecessarily wasting energy during the weekends or holidays. Plus, you can program the thermostat to run on a schedule based on timing and the season.

For example, choosing to set your thermostat to no higher than 67 degrees in the winter or lower than 77 degrees in the summer can improve your energy spending. In fact, just a one degree difference can lower your bill up to 10%!

You can lower your energy consumption even more by turning on your HVAC system 30 minutes before everyone arrives at work and turning it off an hour before they leave. Careful planning like this ensures you’re not wasting energy unnecessarily.

5. Modernize Business Lighting

Many companies ignore the importance of modernizing their lighting in hallways, meeting areas or offices. Leaving lights on will increase your energy consumption, which is why motion sensored lighting and automatic dimmer controllers can ensure the lights turn off when no one is using them. Additionally, these can help adjust lighting based on need and certain situations.

Incandescent bulbs are notorious for wasting energy, but you can get the same output with fluorescent lighting. When choosing fluorescent lighting, reflectors are great companions for additional units not in use.
