The Difference B/W Magnetic Lock and Electric Strike

If you’re creating a door release system with an apartment intercom, you’ll need to determine whether to use electric strike locks or magnetic locks on the doors. The best option for your structure is determined by your requirements and priorities. But how do these locks differ from one another? In this article we’ll discuss the difference b/w magnetic lock and electric strike.

The Difference Between Magnetic and Electric Strike Locks

Electric strike locks (door strikes) and magnetic locks (maglocks) differ a lot in their power requirements. Electric strikes are generally lost, whereas maglocks are fail-safe. To put it differently, magnetic locks require power to lock and open the door, but electric locks do not.

Features Electric Strike Lock

Inside the door frame, electric locks are fitted. A small motor within the electric strike is controlled by electricity. This motor releases the metal piece that holds the door in place when it is triggered. The door will only allow movement and become operational once the electric trigger has been detected.

Only one side of the door is secured with electric locks (generally the exterior of the building). This means that for everyone within the building, the door remains unlocked, but for anyone outside, it remains locked. Visitors unlock the door from the outside using a gadget that sends an electrical signal to the door strike, releasing it.

Remember that an electric strike needs the use of another device, such as a lockset or a panic bar. If the power goes out, these mechanisms ensure that those within the building can unlock the door.

Electric Strike Locks Have a Number of Drawbacks

Electric locks are difficult to understand. You’ll need to hire a professional locksmith to install and power an electric strike because it demands skill and precision. You’ll also need to conduct some research. The electric strike you select must be compatible with your door’s lock bolt.

Magnetic Locks

Magnetic locks, often known as maglocks, require a constant supply of electricity to remain locked. The magnets that keep the door locked are powered by electricity.

Functionality of Magnetic Locks

Magnetic locks use a magnetic field to keep a door shut. Maglocks are made up of two parts:

  • An electromagnet is a device that is usually mounted to the doorframe.
  • An armature plate is a metal plate that is usually attached to the door.

The door remains locked when these two components come into contact and an electric current travels through the electromagnet. The metal plate is attracted to the electromagnet by the magnetic charge created by the current, preventing the door from opening. The magnet loses its charge when the electricity is switched off, and the door opens. Magnetic locks, like electronic locks, can be opened with the use of a keypad, key fob, or other device.

Benefits of Magnetic Locks

A lower-security doorway within a heavily secured area is a good application for a magnetic lock. Magnetic locks are ideal for internal doors where security isn’t a major concern. if the power goes off and the door opens.

The following are some of the advantages of magnetic locks:

  • Strength. A magnetic lock can resist up to 1200 pounds of force on average.
  • Installation is simple. Maglocks are rather simple to set up. You won’t have to go out looking for a contractor with specialised skills or equipment.
  • Adaptability. Increase the current to increase the holding force of the magnet.
  • On both sides of the door, there is security. Maglocks keep both sides of the door locked, unlike electric locks, which only lock one side.

Should You Use a Magnetic Lock or an Electric Strike Lock?

If you’re working on a new development or replacing doors in an older building, the locks you install are important.
