The GE oven does not turn on: what are the reasons?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

What to do when the GE oven does not turn on in the midst of the cooking process? Such a question had to puzzle over more than one owner of this sample of kitchen appliances. The easiest and manufacturer-recommended solution is to contact an oven repair Calgary specialist.

The first step is to determine the complexity of the problem. This is achieved by correctly interpreting the error code. This signal is generated by the self-diagnostic unit on the GE machine panel. There are tables in the instructions provided with each instance to decode the codes. The only difficulty may be that the same error codes may indicate different faults. In this case, it is recommended that you get competent technical advice or call a GE oven repair technician.

The owner can see some of the signs on his own, paying attention to the behaviour of the GE brand oven:

  • The device does not turn on at all: the indication panel does not light up, no operation sounds are heard, and there is no heating inside the cabinet;

  • The equipment can only be switched on for a short period of time, after which it switches off arbitrarily;

  • The surface of the casing overheats, as a result of which the GE oven does not turn on;

  • Indicators flash, and an error code is displayed when the oven is turned on;

  • After plugging in, the unit is unusually slow to reach temperature;

  • The GE oven stops in the middle of cooking;

  • The indication is working but one of the heating components – top or bottom – remains cold;

  • The dish is not cooked completely due to a lack of necessary temperature;

  • When switching on, the oven starts the wrong heating mode;

  • There is no sound of fan operation when switching on the indication and selecting the mode.

Detailed diagnostic results can be obtained after the inspection of the equipment by the repairman. The correctness of such diagnostics is achieved using multimeters, electrical sensors and testers. The result of the survey is practically devoid of errors. Such a diagnosis takes no longer than 15 minutes.

Why won’t my GE oven turn on?

Virtually every part of a GE oven is at risk of malfunctioning for trivial reasons. These include failure to use the appliance properly by the owner, negligent handling, improper installation or wiring. Failure to observe cooking conditions and prolonged use of the oven without cooling also lead to technical problems.

Another category of causes is the unsatisfactory work of the electrical grid. Even the slightest surge in voltage above the 230V mark can lead to cord burnout, short circuit in the contacts of electrical modules, breakdown of the electronic control module and other consequences.

And the most extensive category of causes are technical malfunctions of units and assemblies of GE brand ovens:

Heating element overheating

Often there is an overheating of the upper or lower heating element, as well as the formation of scale, corrosion and mechanical damage on the body of the heating elements. The reasons for the failure of the heating element may be deformation, the appearance of cracks, swelling, or breaks.

Emergency shutdown of the thermal protection system

This device immediately interrupts oven operation in cases of overheating. This can be caused by a malfunction in the heating units, control sensor, fan, or other components.

Breakdown of the timer responsible for choosing the cooking time

Its malfunction blocks the signal to turn on the oven from the control module.

Fan problems

Any of its components can fail.

These include:

  • blade wear

  • split of the cage and loss of bearing balls

  • drive shaft distortion

  • winding burnout.

Cooking mode switch malfunction

It may burn out the contact and loosen the adjustment spring.

Terminal block problems

Frequent problems are short circuits, burnout, and oxidation of metal elements.

Door seal failure

A GE brand oven may not turn on because the oven door does not close properly. This is caused by a worn gasket, a warped door frame, or a warped cabinet.

Breakdown of the thermal relay and temperature sensor

Two other important components can affect the GE oven shutdown already during the temperature setting process. These are a broken thermostat and temperature sensor. They control the intensity of heating inside the oven and turn off the oven when the temperature reaches the temperature set in cooking mode. If one of these devices is not working, the control module receives no signals that the temperature has been reached and shuts down the oven at any stage.
