Miki Agrawal, social entrepreneur and best-selling author, discusses ways to develop business authenticity through authentic connections with her twin sister and business owner, Radha Agrawal.

We are living in an increasingly connected and wildly dynamic world. The choices that we make today can have longstanding impacts on tomorrow and all of the tomorrows thereafter. Miki and Radha Agrawal are the twin-sister dynamos that have taken the entrepreneurial world by storm, developing such successful business ventures as TUSHY and THINX.

Now focused on helping the next generation of entrepreneurs to find their footing, Miki and Radha Agrawal share their key business insights through a collaborative podcast. Focusing on the insights that made them successful while expanding on concepts that they wished they knew earlier, Miki Agrawal and Radha Agrawal had a lot to share.

Let’s explore the entrepreneurial world of business development and brand-building from an authentic perspective by honing in on the words of Miki Agrawal.

Business, Branding and Resilience

Any worthy task may face an uphill sequence that seems impossible to overcome. If life were easy, everyone would be as successful as they want to be. Miki and Radha Agrawal understood early on in their careers that life would not do them any favors unless they were willing to work for them, setting the tone for how they would go on to operate in the business world.

Understanding that they would have to overcome serious hurdles to succeed as an entrepreneur, Radha Agrawal advised followers to practice tenacity, resilience, and authenticity all at once. Sharing advice on a podcast with her twin-sister Miki, Radha recalled her early days in the industry.

Radha stated, “I would write my mentors probably 20 times until I got a response!”

Clearly, a concept mirrored by her sister, Miki and Radha Agrawal focused heavily on the importance of tenacity. From her side, Miki added, “I have been a hard-charging entrepreneur my whole life.”

Finding Connections & Creating a Future

Business acumen and social tenacity don’t have to overlap, but in the cases that they do, it can make for quite a successful professional. Radha Agrawal recalled a moment from her past during her podcast with sister Miki. Before establishing her first big business, Daybreaker, Radha had been trying to connect with a professional in NYC.

Failing to connect with him during his office hours, she decided to show up to a speaking engagement to flag him down personally. He would join her company and become a head researcher for one of her first major projects.

Radha stated of the experience, “So I think that perseverance is something that we aren’t often taught.”

Understanding that rejection is the worst thing that can happen in these instances allowed Radha and Miki to fuel their actions and propel them forward. Radha added, “Empathy becomes fuel for fear because when we care so much about what someone else thinks, it stops us from actually wanting to step on anyone’s toes.”

The sisters would continue exploring the concepts of community and connections while regaling listeners with stories from their lived experiences. Wrapping the subject into a bow, Radha added, “First put down your computer and go meet your friend for that drink, go meet your friend for that dinner.”

Finding Your Tribe, Building a Community

Underscoring all of the efforts that have showcased success for the Agrawal twins has been their utter focus on building a community and finding a tribe of like-minded individuals. Radha said, “We had each other.”

Understanding that not everyone will have a partner or sibling to rely on, Miki and Radha Agrawal spent a significant amount of time on the topics of leadership and community support. Radha stated, “When you have a tribe that supports you and that makes you feel safe (…) you don’t feel weird reaching out to people because you already have friends.”

Radha Agrawal used the concept of community and her desire to find her tribe as a way to fuel the creation of Daybreaker, a communal dance group that consists of more than half a million members across the country. Radha said, “We had 200 people who showed up to our very first event because they were my friends and they cared about me, and I had nurtured those relationships.”

Taking Risks and Finding Success

While Miki Agrawal has enjoyed an expansive list of accomplishments, her first foray into the fire revolved around her tearing down misconceptions while taking major business risks. Miki said of her work with THINX, a sustainable underwear company for women during their menstrual cycles, “At the time, nobody wanted to talk about periods, not a single press wanted to talk about it.”

Miki went on to say, “That was what I got every single day in 2013/’14 and it was, really, really hard.”

Despite their initial setbacks, Miki didn’t want her concept to die without trying to put it into the public sphere. In 2015, Miki would launch a digital campaign that was quickly followed by a series of subway advertisements. These advertisements would be met with instant controversy as the NYC Transit system would not allow the word ‘period’ to be displayed, claiming that it was “offensive to riders.”

Miki decided that she would fight for what she believed in and would thus take a risk, offering to expose the NYC Public Transit system for its hypocrisy, “We basically sent an email out to all press.”

Eventually, both Forbes and would respond by offering to take the story exclusively, breaking it to an international audience. Quickly, the team at THINX would be plastered all over the headlines and before long their efforts were paying dividends, the THINX-branded advertisements were thrust into the public spotlight.

Miki and Radha would go on to explore a story with their first customers, following the release. They had met two strangers on the street and they had been discussing their backgrounds when THINX was brought up in the conversation. The strangers pulled out their phones to show Miki and Radha that they had just been discussing their THINX products.

Miki said, “I teared up and they’re like, “What’s going on?” and I was just like, “Wow, that’s great. Of course. Thanks!”

Imprinting that moment as a core memory, Miki Agrawal added on the podcast, “It was like I felt someone heard my song and they were singing it and they were singing along.”
